STANFORD, Calif. – Chloe Clardy scored 20 and Lara Somfai posted another double-double, but a big third quarter pushed visiting Virginia Tech to a 79- 67 victory over Stanford on Thursday night.

Stanford was up two at the break, 34-32, before the Hokies came out on fire in the third. Virginia Tech made 12-of-17 (.706) in the quarter, was 4-of-5 (.800) on 3-pointers and outscored the Cardinal 28-18.

Stanford was ahead 42-40 a little more than three minutes into the third period when Virginia Tech reeled off an 18-4 run to take control of the game. Over a nearly five-minute stretch, Stanford’s only points came on a Courtney Ogden jumper and a Shay Ijiwoye fastbreak layup. The Hokies made eight of their nine field goal attempts during the run.

In the entire second half, Virginia Tech made 56 percent of its shots, 67 percent of its 3-pointers and had 13 assists on 19 made field goals.

Clardy had her fifth career 20-point game and third this season. Somfai put up 15 points and 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. It’s her second 15-15 game of the season, the first Stanford freshman with two since Chiney Ogwumike in 2010-11. Courtney Ogden added 15 points.

Stanford returns to action when it hosts Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. on The CW.
