Stanford holds three stroke lead heading into final round

LA QUINTA, Calif. — A late round surge catapulted the Stanford men’s golf team up the leaderboard and into the lead as the Cardinal wrapped up second round action at The Prestige on Tuesday. Stanford currently sits in first by three strokes after heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Leading the charge for the Cardinal, TK Chantananuwat turned in a terrific second round outing, shooting 4-under, 67 for his third round in the 60s this season. Chantananuwat turned in a striking 3-under performance through the front nine with consecutive birdies on holes eight and nine. The sophomore fired off one more birdie on hole 13 to finish his second round at 3-under overall and in a tie for second place.

Dean Greyserman also snagged a round in the 60s, earning a 2-under, 69 on the afternoon courtesy of three birdies. Greyserman went clean through the first eight holes and snagged his first of three birdies on hole nine. Greyserman then earned two more birdies early in the back nine before ending his round at 2-under following a bogey on hole 16 to end the afternoon tied for second place at 3-under overall.

Nathan Wang had the largest comeback for the Cardinal on the day, scratching back from a 6-over start through three holes before ending the day at even-par. Having hit a rough patch early, Wang rifled three birdies in four holes in the final stretch of the front nine before snagging three more birdies on the back nine. Wang currently sits inside the top 20 in a tie for 19th at 2-over heading into Wednesday.

Earning four birdies on the day, Jay Leng turned in a solid outing on Tuesday, ending his afternoon at 1-over following an up-and-down round. Leng started the afternoon at 2-over through six holes before earning two birdies to enter the back nine at even-par. Leng did well to counter an early double-bogey on hole 11, grabbing birdies on holes 12 and 14 as he ended the afternoon with a 1-over, 72 card. Leng enters the final round at 5-over inside the top 50.

Serving as the reserve score for the Cardinal on Tuesday, Edan Cui had a solid day turning in a 2-over, 73 card after a relatively clean round. Cui went 1-over through his first two holes but remained steadfast in his approach to the round, hitting par on every hole before earning his first birdie on hole 12 to get back to even. However, Cui hit a rough patch to end the day as two bogeys forced him into the 2-over card for the day. Cui enters the final round at even-par and in a tie for 12th place.

Stanford is back in action for the final round from The Prestige on Wednesday, February 18. Stanford will open from hole one with Jay Leng teeing off in the final portion of the morning wave at 7:40 a.m. PT.
