One Round Down In La Quinta

Cui and Co. sit tied for fourth through first round

LA QUINTA, Calif. — The Stanford men’s golf team shot well in its first round of action at The Prestige on Monday, earning 14 birdies overall including freshman Edan Cui’s team-leading five birdies on the day. Stanford currently sits at even-par and tied for fourth after 18 holes.

Coming off a career-best tournament just over a week ago in Hawaii, Cui turned in the best card for the Cardinal in Monday's opening round, starting his afternoon with four birdies through nine holes along the Greg Norman Course’s back nine. Cui, who did well to battle through some cogs along the course’s front nine, earned his final birdie on hole eight, ending his day at 2-under and rifling his fifth round in the 60’s shooting a 69 as he sits in a tie for sixth place heading into Tuesday’s second round.

Dean Greyserman also turned in a good round on Monday, earning four birdies to hit a 1-under, 70 card through 18 holes. Starting along the back nine, Greyserman earned birdies on the par-five hole 12 and at the turn on 18 to hit the front-nine at 1-under. Greyserman earned his final two birdies on the day on holes four and eight before retiring the day with a bogey on nine to end at 1-under. Greyserman currently sits in tied for 11th after the first round.

TK Chantananuwat and Nathan Wang also had strong days with the former tallying three birdies on his account. Chantananuwat hit the turn to the front nine at even-par following birdies on holes 11 and 18 before a troublesome beginning to the front nine. Chantananuwat, though, did well to save the day, earning a birdie on his final hole of the day and turning in a 1-over, 72 card. Wang, meanwhile, held strong along the back nine, earning his lone birdie on the day on hole 16. The senior then managed to deal with the rough part of the front nine that had given most of the field some trouble before finishing the day at 2-over.

Serving as the reserve score for Stanford, Jay Leng had a strong start to the day, earning his lone birdie on his third hole of the day and hitting the turn to the front nine at 1-over. However, the front nine proved the difference as Leng was forced into a 4-over, 75 card on Monday.

Stanford is back in action tomorrow, February 17, heading out in the morning wave for the second round at The Prestige. Stanford tees off from hole one beginning at 6:45 a.m. PT.
