No. 2 Cardinal Stuns No. 1 UCLA in Hawaii; Bests Host No. 16 Hawai'i

Stanford has now topped a No. 1 team in the opening weekend of the NCAA season for the second straight campaign

HONOLULU – No. 2 Stanford rebounded from a split day of action to open its time in Hawaii with two victories Friday, topping No. 16 Hawai’i 4-1 before downing No. 1 UCLA 3-2 on Queen's Beach.

Stanford (3-1) has now defeated the No. 1 team in the opening weekend of the season for the second straight campaign.

The Cardinal kicked off its match against host No. 16 Hawaii with set one wins on all five courts. After Stanford went up 1-0 due to UH’s pair retirement on court two, sophomores Charlotta Bell and Logan Tusher added the Cardinal’s second match point with a 26-24, 21-14 victory on court four. Sophomore Indigo Clarke and junior Clara Stowell secured the win for the Cardinal with a 21-11, 21-18 triumph on court three, while senior Kelly Belardi and junior Ruby Sorra fought off a comeback attempt by the Rainbow Wahine on court one to win a three-set battle for the fourth match point, 21-15, 18-21, 15-10. Redshirt freshman Elena Fisher and junior Chloe Hoffman battled on court five, but UH’s Serrano-Cornman would secure their team’s lone match point with a 14-21, 26-24, 15-10 victory over the Cardinal duo.

Stanford’s battle with No. 1 UCLA started with wins in set one on courts one, two, and five to give the Cardinal a slight early advantage in the match. UCLA secured the match’s first point with a straight-set victory on court three, but Stanford punched back with Fisher and Hoffman’s 21-17, 21-15 win on court five to even the match. Sophomore Avery Jackson and junior Brooke Rockwell swung the match in the Cardinal’s favor with a 21-19, 22-20 triumph on court two, and Belardi and Sorra captured the upset of the Bruins with a 21-16, 20-22, 15-13 win on court one.

Saturday is Stanford’s final day of action in the Aloha State, wrapping up play at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic with two matchups. The Cardinal’s battles against No. 6 Texas and No. 7 LMU are set for 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. PT, respectively.
