STANFORD, Calif. – Ebuka Okorie scored 34 points as Stanford men’s basketball rolled to a 75-67 victory over visiting Pittsburgh on Wednesday at Maples Pavilion. Stanford improves to 17-11 on the season and 6-9 in the ACC.
Okorie’s 34 points marked his sixth 30-point outing of the season, and his 13th with at least 25 points, which ties him for the national lead with BYU’s AJ Dybantsa. 28 of Okorie’s points came in the second half, setting a new personal best, while the point guard went 11-for-19 from the floor, 3-for-6 from 3-point range and a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line. He also notched six rebounds and six assists.
With the nine made free throws, Okorie ties Brevin Knight (1996-97) for ninth place on Stanford’s single-season list, passing John Revelli, Reid Travis and Arthur Lee during the contest. Adding three steals on the night, Okorie tied Daejon Davis (2017-18) for sixth on Stanford’s freshman steals list.
Benny Gealer and Aidan Cammann were in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Jaylen Thompson scored a career-best eight points in a career-high 32 minutes played in his first start of the season. Gealer ended the night with 71 3-pointers on the season, which matches Anthony Goods and Aaron Bright for 16th place in Stanford single-season history.
As a team, Stanford combined to shoot 50 percent from the floor and held a 42-24 advantage in the paint.
The second win over the Panthers (10-18, 3-12 ACC) in program history, and the first as members of the ACC, Stanford trailed early by as many as seven points, 24-17, with 7:54 to play in the first half. The Cardinal regained the lead with 3:26 remaining, 30-29, in the period after a 7-0 run all from Gealer, but Pittsburgh led at the half by two, 34-32.
The second half featured seven lead changes, but Okorie’s dominance down the stretch was too much for Pittsburgh to handle. After a personal 9-0 run during the middle of the period, Pittsburgh responded with an 11-0 run to take a 63-57 lead with 7:08 to play. Stanford answered with back-to-back and-ones from Cammann and Okorie, and Okorie scored 13 of the Cardinal’s final 15 points, in an 18-4 overall run, to help Stanford secure the result.
Stanford closes its regular season home slate with Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. against SMU. The action will air on ACC Network.
