STANFORD, Calif. – Three-time All-American Connie Ma has been added to women’s tennis head coach Frankie Brennan’s staff as an assistant coach, Brennan announced Thursday. Ma recently concluded a standout playing career with the Cardinal from 2022-25.
“We are very lucky to have Connie join us for the dual portion of our season,” Brennan said. “She was not only an accomplished player, but she was very tactical in her approach to the game and sees it differently than a lot of players did when they were on the court. We can already see her growth as a coach and her approach to a gameplan and strategy for our student-athletes. Connie is great person, a hard worker, and a good motivator and we’re fortunate to have her in this role.”
Ma put together a 131-28 overall singles record in her four seasons as a player at Stanford, including a 68-14 dual mark. She was the ITA National Rookie of the Year in 2022, also the year of her first of three All-America honors (2022, 2024, 2025), and went 61-18 against ranked opponents and 6-2 in NCAA team competition.
In 2024, Ma was named the College Sports Communicators Women's Tennis Academic All-America Team Member of the Year and was the winner of the prestigious ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to the national student-athlete who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements in ways that embody the legacy of tennis icon and humanitarian Arthur Ashe Jr.
Also a two-time, first-team Academic All-American, Ma won ITA Northwest Region Senior Player of the Year in 2025 and was the region’s Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award winner in 2024 in addition to her ITA national honors. She was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and part of the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year in 2022 and a four-time, first-team all-conference selection (three Pac-12, one ACC).
Ma, who majored in human biology, has remained on campus following her playing career to finish up premed requirements before an anticipated matriculation to medical school in the fall.
Ma is the second former Cardinal player on the Stanford coaching staff along with fellow assistant Janice Shin, who had a standout playing career from 2018-21.
