CALGARY, Alberta - No. 2 Stanford men's gymnastics produced a strong showing north of the border, competing in Friday evening's portion of the Elite Canada event at the BMO Centre.
The Cardinal suffered a narrow defeat in the head-to-head competition with the Canadian National Team, scoring a 321.965 to Team Canada's 322.528 under the collegiate 4-up, 4-count scoring format.
Jun Iwai led the way for Stanford with a 79.916 in the all-around race, which included a pair of career-high performances on floor exercise (14.350) and high bar (13.800).
Nick Kuebler continued his impressive senior campaign by sticking a 14.200 routine on still rings, adding 13.650 score on high bar. Asher Hong produced the Cardinal's best showing on parallel bars with a 14.250, following up his impressive season debut at the Stanford Open two weeks ago.
Cooper Kim added a pair of 14-plus performances of his own, turning in a 14.300 routine of floor, followed by a 14.000 effort on vault. Arun Chhetri also added two strong routines, including a 14.100 on parallel bars and a 13.900 on pommel horse.
Additional notbale performances included a 13.650 from Reece Landsperger on still rings, while Marcus Kushner excelled on pommel horse with a 14.100.
Stanford will send its contingent of qualifiers to the Winter Cup next, heading to Louisville, Ky., to compete on Saturday, Jan. 21. The collegiate slate resumes the following weekend with the Stanford International Collegiate on Jan. 28.
