Cardinal Wraps Competition in Canada

Stanford had four event winners in Friday's portion of the Elite Canada event

CALGARY, Alberta - No. 2 Stanford men's gymnastics produced a strong showing north of the border, claiming four event titles during Friday evening's portion of the Elite Canada event at the BMO Centre.

The Cardinal suffered a narrow defeat in the head-to-head competition with the Canadian National Team, scoring a 321.965 to Team Canada's 322.528. 

Jun Iwai lead the way for Stanford with a second-place effort in the all-around race, scoring a 79.916. The freshman won a pair of event titles with a pair of career-high performances, besting the field on floor exercise (14.350) and high bar (13.800)

Nick Kuebler continued his impressive senior campaign with a still rings title, sticking a 14.200 routine for a team-leading sixth event title of the year. Kuebler added a runner-up finish on high bar, turning in a 13.650 routine. 

Asher Hong rounded out the Cardinal event winners with a season-best 14.250 to win the parallel bars crown, following up his impressive season debut at the Stanford Open two weeks ago. 

Cooper Kim added a pair of 14-plus performances of his own, finishing in second-place on floor with a season-best 14.300 routine, followed by a fourth-place 14.000 effort on vault. Arun Chhetri also added two strong routines, including a runner-up 14.100 on parallel bars and a 13.900 on pommel horse to finish fourth. 

Additional podium performances included a 13.650 from Reece Landsperger to finish second on still rings, while Marcus Kushner earned the bronze medal on pommel horse with a 14.100. 

Stanford will send its contingent of qualifiers to the Winter Cup next, heading to Louisville, Ky., to compete on Saturday, Jan. 21. The collegiate slate resumes the following weekend with the Stanford International Collegiate on Jan. 28.
