Friendly Front Nine

Stanford uses front nine birdies to slot in 10th through one round in Cabo

LOS CABOS, Mexico — A friendly front nine helped propel the Stanford men’s golf team through the first round of the Cabo Collegiate as the Cardinal rattled off a 2-over performance through 18 holes of play. Stanford sits in 10th place entering Monday's second round.

Nathan Wang led the way for the Cardinal on Sunday, turning in a 3-under, 68 for his sixth sub-70 round of the season. Wang entered the front nine at 1-under after an eagle on his second hole of the day - a par-five hole 13 - negated the bogey that followed as the senior held the Cardinal in team contention. Wang then earned a perfect front-nine, amassing two consecutive birdies on holes six and seven before a birdie on his final hole of the day earned him his 3-under card. Wang sits in a tie for sixth place heading into Monday.

Also shooting strong for the Cardinal was Edan Cui and Jay Leng as both underclassmen finished at 1-over through the first 18 holes. Cui battled back from a 2-over start to the back nine by earning his lone birdie of the day on hole two. Leng, however, started at 1-over after a bogey on his first hole of the day but battled back with two birdies on the front nine to end the afternoon. Both Cardinal sit in a tie for 33rd entering the second round.

Fresh off a second-place finish at The Prestige, Dean Greyserman battled through the tough course, finishing the day at 3-over par. Greyserman battled back from a tough start with two of his four birdies on the back nine to hit the turn at 2-over before clipping at 1-under following a birdie on hole one. Despite some late round trouble, Greyserman’s birdie on hole three kept him in the top 50 as the senior sits in 47th overall.

Serving as Stanford’s reserve score on Sunday, TK Chantananuwat battled hard throughout the afternoon, turning in an 8-over card. The sophomore earned one birdie on the day and went perfect on seven of the nine holes on the front nine to end the round in 75th.

Stanford is back in action for the second round of the Cabo Collegiate on Monday, March 2. The Cardinal tees off at 8:30 a.m. MT.
