NEW ORLEANS – The Cardinal topped a pair of Tulane-hosted regattas this weekend, finishing first at the Nelson Roltsch Team Race as well as the Green Wave Women's Team Race. The two top finishes makes five-straight wins to open the spring season Stanford.
“The ladies sailed very well, despite some of our top players missing from the lineup, those who have been waiting for their opportunity stepped up in a big way," said head coach Chris Klevan. "And those who have won championships and have been named All-Americans showed what winning looks like. We have a great squad. We are enjoying the work, trusting each other and holding ourselves accountable. It's all I can ask for three weeks into the process.”
The Cardinal won all 10 races at the Green Wave Women's Team Race, with sweeps of the top three spots twice. Alice Schmid, Alexandra Jones, Sophie Fisher, Kate Myles, Samara Walshe and Kit Harned all competed for the Cardinal.
The results were the same at the Nelson Roltsch Team Race, with Stanford sweeping again in the six-team competition.
“The coed team sailed very well. They played to their strengths and put away some good teams," said Klevan. "It's early in the season, we know what we need to work on. But I'm very encouraged by what I saw. I believe we have a group capable to win it all.”
Reade Decker, Callie Hammond, Vanessa Lahrkamp, Piper Blackband, Thomas Sitzmann and Abby Baird all competed as the Cardinal went 10-0.
Stanford finished in the top three spots of three races, and the top two spots in nine of ten.
The Cardinal is back in action next weekend, competing in the Jen Harris Women's Team Race, the Bob Bavier Open Team Race and the St. Mary's Open Team Race.
