Cardinal Places Ninth in Cabo

Stanford shows well in annual trip to Cabo Collegiate

LOS CABOS, Mex. — Three underclassmen combined for even-par or better as the Stanford men’s golf team wrapped up competition at the Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday. Stanford, which ended the tournament at 7-over as a team, claimed ninth overall in its first tournament of the month.

Jay Leng shot up the leaderboard during Tuesday’s final round, turning in his best round of the tournament with a 1-under, 70 card on the final day. Leng went perfect to begin the day, earning his first of three birdies of the day on hole 16. Though the sophomore hit trouble with bogeys on holes one and eight, his two birdies on holes three and five saw him skate through the front nine at even par. Leng hit for par on his final shot of the tournament as he ended the tournament at even-par and tied for 21st overall.

Shooting even-par on the final day, both Edan Cui and TK Chantananuwat increased positions during the final round with the former slotting in a tie for 25th overall. Cui had a remarkable start to the round with a birdie on hole 12 before an eagle on hole 13 as he entered the turn to the front nine at 1-under. Cui salvaged the even-par round with a birdie on hole five to finish the tournament at 1-over and tied for 25th overall.

Chantananuwat had his best round of the tournament as well, increasing nearly 10 positions overall with an even-par, 71 card. The sophomore battled through early trouble in his first three holes by earning his first of three birdies on hole 16. He then followed it up with birdies on holes two and nine, claiming a 1-under score on the front nine before ending his afternoon at even-par. Chantananuwat finished the tournament at 11-over and tied for 64th.

Nathan Wang also shot well along the front nine during Tuesday’s round, earning two birdies on the day. Wang, who entered the day at 1-under, hit some trouble along the back nine start, entering the turn at 3-over. The senior earned his second birdie of the day on hole one before ending the round at 3-over and just outside the top-20 overall, slotting in a tie for 30th overall at 2-over for the tournament.

Dean Greyserman finished as the reserve score for the Cardinal on Tuesday, rattling off a 4-over, 75 card. Greyserman was plagued by two double-bogeys on the afternoon having snatched two birdies through the round. Entering the front nine at 1-over through seven, Greyserman went over par on two holes before earning his second birdie of the round on hole six. Greyserman finished the tournament at 8-over and tied for 53rd overall.

Stanford is back in action later this month as it hosts the 57th installment of The Goodwin at the Stanford Golf Course from March 26-28.
