Cardinal Ousted in Overtime

Stanford drops ACC Tournament opener to Miami, 83-76

DULUTH, Ga. – Stanford closed regulation on an 11-0 run to force overtime but came up short in Wednesday’s first round of the ACC Tournament against Miami, losing 83-76.

The Cardinal trailed 70-59 when Ra Shaya Kyle made a layup with 6:21 on the clock in the fourth quarter, but Miami wouldn’t score the remainder of the period. Stanford’s run started with Lara Somfai drilled a 3-pointer with 2:45 to go to start a stretch of four consecutive Cardinal makes. Hailee Swain followed with a pull-up jumper, split a pair of free throws on the next possession, and Courtney Ogden sank a triple to pull Stanford within two.

Miami’s Gal Raviv turned it over with 22 seconds left and Stanford called at timeout to advance in front of its bench. Mary Ashley Stevenson inbounded it to Ogden, who made a driving layup off glass going to her left to tie it 70-70 with 19 seconds to go. The Hurricanes wouldn’t get a shot off on their final possession.

Miami didn’t trail in overtime, starting the extra period with a three-point from Amarachi Kimpson. Chloe Clardy scored all six of Stanford’s points over the final five minutes.

Courtney Ogden led the Cardinal with 22 points, five rebounds and six assists and Hailee Swain made a career-high four 3-pointers to score her 17. Lara Somfai added 12 points and seven rebounds and Nunu Agara had 11 points and eight boards.

Stanford trailed by as many as 13 early in the second quarter but scored 29 in that period to take a 39-37 lead into the break. Miami had a 15-0 run late in the first quarter. After starting 3-of-5 from the floor, the Cardinal would make just one of its last 15 attempts to end the first.

The Cardinal will await its postseason fate when brackets for the NCAA Tournament and WBIT are announced on Sunday, March 15.
