LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville left-hander Ethan Eberle navigated six scoreless innings and struck out seven as the Cardinals (20-15, 6-8 ACC) blanked Stanford (15-16, 5-9 ACC) 10-0 in a seven-inning game on Saturday to even a three-game series between the two teams.
Stanford finished the game with nine hits, but all nine went for singles, as Eberle worked out of every jam presented on the afternoon to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season.
A microcosm of the game, Stanford needed one run in the seventh to evade a run-rule loss, but could not scratch anything across after loading the bases with nobody out against reliever Jake Schweitzer. The right-hander allowed singles to Rintaro Sasaki and Teddy Tokheim to start the inning before hitting Eric Jeon to load the bases. Pinch hitter Rashad Hayes struck out looking on the ensuing play before JJ Moran grounded into a game-ending double play.
Despite hitting .321 (9-28) in the game, Stanford went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position en route to stranding 11.
One day after being held to two runs in a 12-2 setback, Louisville’s offense exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits. The Cardinals scored four in the first inning off Stanford starter Sam Garewal, three in the third and three in the fourth to earn the victory.
Garewal was ultimately charged with the loss and dropped to 0-2 after surrendering seven runs on seven hits and three walks over three innings of work.
Kade Elam delivered all three for Louisville in the third with his fourth home run of the season, while RBI-doubles from Bayram Hot and Lucas Moore highlighted the three-run fourth. Moore finished the game with four RBIs.
The Cardinal and Cardinals will decide the three-game series on Sunday when they meet for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
