Solid Start in Santa Cruz

Greyserman, Cardinal sit third after 18 holes at 79th Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Dean Greyserman’s second-lowest round of the season highlighted a successful start for the Stanford men’s golf team as the Cardinal wrapped up the first round of The Western Intercollegiate on Monday. Stanford sits at 4-under and in third place heading into Tuesday’s second round. 

Greyserman, who earned his sixth round in the 60’s on the season on Monday, battled back from a 2-over card through three holes with six birdies to end the afternoon. The senior snagged birdies on holes four, seven and hole nine - the final of which after a two-shot approach on the par-five. Greyserman tallied three more birdies on the back-nine, turning in a 32 through his final nine holes as he ended the day tied for third place with a 4-under, 66. 

Edan Cui also shot under-par on Monday, battling through a tough portion of the front-nine. Cui snagged a birdie on his first hole of the day before negating a double-bogey on hole five with a birdie on hole seven. The freshman then eagled hole nine after a bogey on hole eight to hit the turn at 1-under. Cui then held serve along the back-nine, snagging one final birdie on hole 13 to end the day with a 2-under, 68 and in a tie for 11th place. 

Ethan Gao and Nathan Wang both shot even-par for the day but had different ways of getting there. Gao rattled through a 2-under, 33 into the turn after snagging three birdies before turning a 2-over score on the back-nine, ending the day in 28th place. Wang, however, snagged three birdies on the front nine but hit the turn at 1-over. The senior continued battling on the final nine holes of the afternoon with two birdies as he ended the day tied for 28th. 

Cooper Stearns and Jay Leng also had solid rounds during Monday’s tournament-opener with both players shooting 2-over for the day. Stearns handled a tough opening nine with two birdies while shooting a 33 on the back-nine to end the day with a 72 and in a tie for 44th place. Leng entered the turn at 1-under and scored his second birdie of the day on hole 12 before ending the day at 2-over and tied with Stearns for 44th overall. 

Serving as Stanford’s individual golfer, Kush Arora had a strong day for the Cardinal, turning in a 34 at the turn before ending his day at 1-over following a birdie on hole 13 as sits inside the top-40 in 36th. 

Stanford is back in action for the second round of the Western Intercollegiate on Tuesday, April 14. Stanford tees off from hole one at 12:36 p.m.
