SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Jay Leng and Nathan Wang’s sub-70 rounds highlighted a strong day for the Stanford men’s golf team as the Cardinal battled through the second round of the 79th Western Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. Stanford sits at 6-over for the tournament and occupies eighth place overall.
Leng led the Cardinal during Tuesday’s outing, rifling a 1-under card through the front nine before snagging three birdies on the back nine to end the round at 3-under. Leng, who entered the day at 2-over, secured his 17th round in the 60’s in his career and third in his last five rounds as he now slots at 1-under for the tournament and tied for 20th overall.
Wang, however, entered the afternoon at even-par and blitzed off the first tee with authority as he hit the turn at 3-under with four birdies. The senior continued his torrid pace on Tuesday with two birdies on two of the first four holes of the back nine before running into trouble late in the round. Wang finished the afternoon at 2-under for the round as his ninth round in the 60’s this season slots him tied for 15th overall heading into Wednesday.
Dean Greyserman and Cooper Stearns also did well to battle the tough course as Greyserman turned in a 2-over card while Stearns went 5-over for the day. Greyserman snagged two birdies on the front nine to hit the turn at 2-over before the senior held serve in the final nine, ending the day at 2-under overall and tied for 15th. Stearns, meanwhile, amassed his three birdies all on the front nine as the freshman did well to negate some late round trouble, ending the day at 7-over for the tournament.
Ethan Gao and Edan Cui both did well on the back stretch, hitting their stride in the back-nine as both golfers claimed a birdie on the day. Gao ended the afternoon at 8-over as he slots inside the top-70 while Cui’s 3-over on the back stretch keeps him inside the top-65. Golfing individually, Kush Arora snagged four birdies on Tuesday as he ended the afternoon at 6-over for the tournament and inside the top-60.
