Greyserman Winner at The Western

Cardinal senior secures first collegiate win with Co-Champion honor at 79th Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Highlighted by an 8-under, 62 card, Dean Greyserman earned his first collegiate win of his Stanford career, sharing co-champion honors as the Cardinal wrapped up the final round of competition at the 79th Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday. Stanford ended the tournament shooting the lowest of any team in the field on the third day at 12-under par, finishing the tournament tied for fifth overall.

Greyserman becomes Stanford’s 10th individual champion at the Western Intercollegiate and first since Isaiah Salinda won the tournament in 2019. He also becomes the first co-champion under the tournament’s new format, sharing the honor with Southern California’s Jack Buchanan.

Less than two feet stood between Greyserman’s tee shot and the pin at hole 18. The Stanford senior, who had tied the course record with a 61 earlier this month, had squared his penultimate shot of the tournament just ahead of competitor Taishi Moto of Arizona as both players sought to catch leader Jack Buchanan - who entered the day at 11-under - with one hole left. Greyserman, who had battled through the greens for the previous two days, tucked away his seventh birdie of the day ending the afternoon by tying the course record with his 8-under, 62 round as the waiting game began to crown the tournament’s individual champion.

It was a full 18-hole effort for Greyserman as the senior entered the afternoon at 2-under and nine shots back of Buchanon who went off in the last wave of the final foursome. Dean, who had snuck a 1-under card on the first day, grabbed a massive advantage through the front-nine with three birdies before lipping in a four-foot putt on hole nine for eagle. Greyserman then seized the momentum on the back stretch, rifling home birdies on holes 10, 12 and 14 before his tee shot put him just inches from setting a new tournament record as he tapped in his final shot for birdie and set a new career-low with the 8-under, 62.

With Buchanan mustering through the final four holes of the evening, it was the greens that kept Greyserman in contention for the individual crown. Buchanan - who entered the final four holes at even-par after setting the course record at 8-under during Tuesday's second round - shorted his putt on 14 to keep Greyserman alive. On the final hole, it was the tee shot that gave Greyserman the tie for first as Buchanon’s risk smacked into the bunker past the pin, setting up a hard recovery for the leader. Although the recovery shot put Buchanon on the front side of the pin, an eventual 10-foot putt went wide forcing Buchanan into a bogey and giving Greyserman a piece of the individual glory.

Stanford also received blistering outings from multiple Cardinal as the team finished with the second-lowest team round of the tournament at 12-under par. Jay Leng nabbed his third career top-10 finish with by turning in a 4-under card on Wednesday, cleaning house on the front nine with three birdies before claiming two more plus an eagle on hole 13 along the back-nine. Leng finished the tournament tied for seventh overall at 5-under.

Natan Wang solidified himself in the top-20 for the second-straight tournament - and fourth in the last five tournaments - as the senior held serve throughout the afternoon with a 1-over card. Wang snagged two birdies to finish as Stanford’s No. 5-scorer as he placed tied for 18th overall at 1-under for the tournament.

Having bounceback rounds themselves, freshmen Edan Cui and Cooper Stearns both shot well on the afternoon to keep Stanford in contention for a top-five team finish. Cui, who turned in a 1-under, 69 on the final day, snagged four birdies along the front nine as he ended the tournament tied for 51st at 6-over. Stearns, meanwhile, bounced back from a triple-bogey on hole eight with his first albatross on the par-five hole nine, holing out from 210 yards to enter the turn at 1-under. Stearns finished the round at even-par while placing tied 55th overall at 7-over.

Ethan Gao finished as the reserve score for the Cardinal as the junior earned three birdies on the afternoon, turning in a 3-over, 73 card to finish tied for 65th overall. Golfing as Stanford’s individual, Kush Arora earned two birdies during his final round of the regular season as he slotted tied for 73rd overall.

Stanford is back in action next week as the Cardinal head to Panama City, Fla., taking part in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships. First round stroke play begins on Thursday, April 23.
