STANFORD, Calif. — For the second time in her collegiate career, Stanford goalkeeper Lucy Pearson has been named the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) DI National Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.
Pearson nabs the honor for the second time in her career having backstopped the Cardinal into its first-ever NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal, earning a 2-0 record during the NCAA First and Second rounds last week in Ann Arbor, Mich. Pearson tallied nine saves in the 7-5 win over Penn State, allowing a complete-game season-low five goals while holding the Nittany Lions scoreless in the second half. Pearson then followed up her First Round performance with a five-save outing against No. 7 Michigan including a free-position shot save that kept the Cardinal in the game late in regulation.
Pearson has recorded a 13-1 record this season with her lone loss coming in the ACC Championship game against No. 1 North Carolina where she made eight saves. She has earned six or more saves in eight games this season while posting a collegiate-best 7.97 goals-against average (min. 100 minutes) this season. A native of Philadelphia, Penn., Pearson owns the fifth-most career games played by a goalkeeper in program history (55) while posting the third-best goals-against average all-time at 9.02.
Pearson and the Cardinal are back in action on Thursday, May 14, as the Cardinal take on the No. 2-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Opening draw from Dorrance Field is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT.
