Stanford competes in its second MPSF men's rowing championship

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Stanford men’s rowing team competes in the second edition of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship on Sunday on Lake Natoma.

The MPSF consists of six programs, including four from the former Pac-12 Conference – current No. 5 Stanford, No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, and Oregon State. Also competing are the University of British Columbia and UC San Diego. Washington is the two-time defending IRA national champion.

Stanford has placed third in the varsity eight race at its conference championships the past 11 seasons, and has 20 consecutive top-three finishes, going back to 2005 in the Pac-10.

The Cardinal 1V8+ and 2V8+ boats are 6-4 this season and the 3V8+ is 4-4.

Five individuals have rowed in every race for the varsity eight: junior Tom Corbett, sophomore Elliott Donovan-Davies, senior James Pullinger, junior Sandro Scalfi, and junior Luke Smith. In addition, sophomore Gabriel George and freshman Finn Lorgen have been fixtures on the 1V8+ and especially vital.

Lake Natoma is a section of the American River, and home of the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, where the course is based.

On Sunday, the varsity grand final is at 10 a.m., the second varsity grand final is at 9:45 a.m. and the third varsity grand final is at 9:30 a.m.
