Another Second-Place Finish

Cardinal comes second at ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship

PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Cardinal took second at this week’s ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship today, closing another dominant season of competition for Stanford Sailing. Stanford finished with 174 points, just shy of Brown’s 163.

The Card’s second-place finish came after the season already featured ICSA Women’s Fleet Race and Team Race National Championships, and another second-place finish at the ICSA Open Team Race National Championship.

“At times there's nothing to do but tip your cap to the opposition,” said head coach Chris Klevan. “I think this is one of those instances. Brown sailed very well. They are a worthy champion. We also sailed very well. But this time, not quite well enough.”

The Cardinal was led by Thomas Sitzmann and Callie Hammond in the A boat, who finished first with a total of 65 points. The duo finished first in four of the 14 races.

The B boat featured Vanessa Lahrkamp and Alice Schmid for the first four races, then Reade Decker and Abby Baird for the final 10. The boat finished fifth with 109 points.

Stanford finishes with multiple national championships for the third-straight season. This spring, the Cardinal finished first in 21 of 25 regattas, only failing to miss the top three once.
