Cardinal Contingent Heads to NCAA West Prelims

STANFORD, Calif. - Twenty Cardinal student-athletes and a pair of women's relay teams head to the NCAA West Prelims this week looking to secure their bids to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in two weeks.

One of two regional sites this week, the NCAA West Prelims will be hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., at John McDonnell Field on May 27-30. The east regional will be held in Lexington, Ky., at the University of Kentucky Track & Field Complex.

The men will compete on Wednesday and Friday this week, while the women's events are slated for Thursday and Saturday. The top 12 in each event advance to the NCAA Championships on June 10-13, creating a 24-participant field in Eugene next month.

The Cardinal women are highlighted by 2024 NCAA 800m champion Juliette Whittaker and ten-time NCAA All-American Alyssa Jones.

Jones had the ACC Championships' most dominant showing two weeks ago with conference titles in both the high jump and long jump and was selected as the ACC Women's Field Most Valuable Performer.

Meanwhile, Whittaker won by the meet's narrowest margin of victory in the 1500 meters, outkicking Sadie Engelhardt to win by .03 seconds. Whittaker is scheduled to compete in the 800 meters this week.

ACC discus champion Brandy Atuatasi leads three Cardinal women in the event this weekend, joined by Julia Lemmon and Emma Sralla. Another Cardinal trio of Addie Pendergast, Diane Richard, and Tess Stapleton will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, each looking to secure their first career NCAA Championships bids.

Leo Young and Zane Bergen lead the Cardinal men as returning NCAA West Prelims qualifiers, with both set to compete in the 1500 meters. Young will pull double duty this weekend, also racing in the 5000 meters.
