Stanford defeats Pepperdine to advance to semifinals

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Stanford women’s golf made quick work of eight-seeded Pepperdine in the 2026 NCAA match play quarterfinals, winning 3-0 and closing out the match ahead in all five matches.

It didn’t start that way for the Cardinal, who saw a couple of matches go in favor of the Waves. Meja Örtengren, who shot a 79 in the final round of stroke play, dropped her first three holes to Grace Anderson of Pepperdine, falling into a massive early deficit. Paula Martín Sampedro struggled out of the gate as well, dropping two of the first three holes.

None of that deterred the Cardinal, who quickly started to pile hole wins on the board. Andrea Revuelta was the first one to climb out to a significant lead, winning the opening hole and opening a 3up advantage through the first six holes. She continued that all the way through, playing a clean round with five birdies en route to a 5&4 win over Kylee Choi, wrapping up the first team point.

The second point came shortly thereafter, when Martín Sampedro flipped hers into a commanding lead. That early two-hole deficit was quickly erased on the front nine, winning five consecutive holes to flip the match into a 3up advantage heading to the back nine. Despite dropping hole 6 with a bogey, she closed it out with a fantastic chip on hole 7 to save a par, as she was well short of the green but got close enough for the hole to be conceded.

The final point, almost improbably at one point, came from Örtengren. Like Martín Sampedro, she was able to flip her match before the turn, tying it up through nine holes, and then took her first lead three holes into the back nine. Her match was the only one to see the last hole, which for this group was hole 9. Örtengren had a great, long putt that ended in a par, securing a 1up win and a 3-0 Stanford sweep over the Waves.

Stanford will face fifth-seeded Eastern Michigan in the semifinals, teeing off on the first tee at 2:05 pm. Eastern Michigan had never qualified for the NCAA Championship prior to this year, and has already secured the best finish by a program in its first championship appearance since at least 2000. The winner will face the victor of second seeded USC and third seeded Arkansas for the national championship.
