Tournament Bound Again

Stanford snags third-consecutive NCAA berth to continue record-setting season

STANFORD, Calif. — In what has been another historic season to date, Stanford women’s lacrosse is back in the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season. The Cardinal takes on Penn State in the first round of the tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Cardinal, which finished No. 11 in the RPI, takes on the Nittany Lions in the Michigan regional joining hosts No. 7 Michigan and Mercer as the quartet of teams in the region. Stanford takes on Penn State at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, May 8.

Stanford (15-4, 8-2 ACC) heads to The Mitten State following a thrilling run in the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship last week as the Cardinal dispelled the No. 7-seeded Boston College Eagles and the No. 3-seeded Clemson Tigers to make its first appearance in the ACC Title game before falling to No. 1 North Carolina in a 12-8 thriller. With the two wins in the tournament, Stanford claimed its ninth total win over ranked opposition while posting a generous resume for a possible seeded berth in the NCAA Tournament heading into Selection Sunday.

The Cardinal has now made the NCAA Tournament 14 times and extends its run to three-straight following this season’s berth. Stanford earned its first NCAA Tournament win under head coach Danielle Spencer last season as the Cardinal thwarted Denver, 10-4, in the first round of the Gainesville regional before falling to hosts, No. 4 Florida, in an overtime heartbreaker, 13-12.

Stanford enters the NCAA Tournament with four wins in program history including last season’s win over the Pioneers. Stanford has advanced to the second round on three occasions following last year, advancing past the first round in 2013 with an 8-7 win over Notre Dame before advancing to the second round in 2016 with a win over Notre Dame.
