2025-26: Season in Review

Cardinal becomes first dynasty in women's golf in 20 years

STANFORD, Calif. — One of the greatest teams in the history of Stanford Athletics? That's in the conversation for Stanford women's golf, as the Cardinal closed out an incredible 2025-26 season as NCAA Champions for the third time in five years, securing a dynasty.

SWEEPING THROUGH LA COSTA

Stanford returned to the top of the women's golf world with an incredible run at Omni La Costa, specifically in match play.

After entering as the top overall seed for match play once again, the sixth year in a row, the Cardinal put on three of the best rounds of match play that the NCAA Championship has seen. Stanford drew eighth-seeded Pepperdine in the quarterfinals and breezed past the Waves, winning 3-0 while leading in the other two matches that didn't finish. The same can be said for Stanford's result in the semifinals, beating an upstart Eastern Michigan squad for a spot in the finals.

A heavyweight tilt was expected between Stanford and No. 2 USC for the national championship, but Stanford took a firm hold on most of the matches early and never surrendered those leads. Stanford beat USC officially 3-0, leading in one unfinished match while trailing in another, with Megha Ganne knocking down the winning putt on the 15th green. It was a special moment for Ganne, who finished runner-up in stroke play, closing out her Cardinal career.

Stanford secured its third national championship in five years, becoming the first women's golf dynasty in the NCAA since Duke (2005-07).

A RUN UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Stanford has been the most dominant golf program in the country over the last four years, and it isn’t particularly close. Stanford’s overall win-loss-tie record is 506-20-5, coinciding with the four-year run of current seniors Megha Ganne and Kelly Xu. Some other notables during that span...

Team wins - 28

Individual wins - 23

Match play record - 19-7

All-Americans - 22

THE BEST TEAM...EVER?

With Stanford returning its entire starting lineup from its 2025 NCAA national runner-up team, there is a conversation that this team might have been the best college golf team ever assembled. It’s hard to argue with facts.

Four different individuals won this year, the second consecutive year Stanford has boasted four individual winners. Two golfers (Paula Martín Sampedro and Andrea Revuelta) won twice. The highest average score in Stanford’s lineup is 70.50, held by Meja Örtengren. That scoring average represents the 25th-best single-season stroke average in NCAA history...and still the worst in this lineup.

The average Stanford score in a traditional “5-count-4” lineup was 69.68. Across all nine golfers on its roster in all tournaments, their combined average score was 71.29.

Not only were all five in the lineup spectacular all season, but they were strong on the international scale, as well. All five in Stanford's lineup finished the season ranked in the top-17 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Almost as impressive, Stanford did not lose a stroke-play tournament after it finished second in the Jackson T. Stephens Cup to begin the year, winning its final eight stroke-play tournaments.

GETTING HOT AT THE RIGHT TIME

Despite not losing a stroke-play tournament after September, this team endured some adversity. After a surprising match-play loss to San Jose State on March 2, the Cardinal got better with each tournament.

Starting with its win at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate, where nine of the 13 teams were ranked in the top-25 in the country, the Cardinal won everything in convincing fashion. They snuck by with a three-stroke win at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate, but then cleared the field by 11 strokes in stroke play at the ACC Championship. Stanford then swept No. 10 Duke and SMU 3-0 in match play to win its first ACC Championship, and then set all sorts of records at the NCAA Stanford Regional. The Cardinal set the Stanford Golf Course single-round scoring record (17-under), 54-hole scoring record (42-under), and set the program record for largest margin of victory (38 strokes).

Stanford had two postseason winners. Paula Martín Sampedro won the individual championship at the ACC Championship, Stanford’s second in as many seasons, tying the ACC Championship scoring record with a 202 (-14). Andrea Revuelta then won the NCAA Stanford Regional, her second NCAA Regional win in as many collegiate seasons. She became just the second Cardinal to win multiple regional championships in her career (Rachel Heck).

ALL CARDINAL AT AUGUSTA

The 2026 Augusta National Women’s Amateur featured a heavy dosage of Cardinal red as five current and one former Stanford golfer were invited to this year’s event at Augusta National. The current Cardinal were Megha Ganne, Paula Martín Sampedro, Meja Örtengren, Andrea Revuelta, and Kelly Xu. Over the last three years, Stanford has had an incredible 23 current/former/future golfers in the field, by far the most of any program in the country.

Three Cardinal made the cut to the final round, and all three impressed in their own right. Meja Örtengren sat second on the leaderboard heading into the final round, where she eventually finished in a tie for fourth. Despite being further down the leaderboard entering the final round, Andrea Revuelta shot a 68, tying for the lowest round of the day, to finish second. Only Rose Zhang (2023 winner) has had a better finish among Stanford’s ANWA contingent. Paula Martín Sampedro also finished ninth, giving Stanford three in the top 10, the most of any school in the country.
