13 Cardinal Secure 10 Medals at U-23 World Championships

Current members of the Stanford women's rowing team made a statement at the Under-23 World Championships held July 23-26 in Duisburg, Germany. 

13 student-athletes represented the Cardinal, hauling in 10 medals while competing for four different countries at the event. Claire van Praagh ‘29, Annika Jeffery ‘26, Emily Tierney ‘29, Carly Brown ‘28, Valentina Fenton ‘28, Martha Shepherd ‘28, and Emma Bagrie ‘29 each competed at the event for the first time, while Quincy Stone ‘27, Sumner Kerr ‘29, Madeleine Greenstock ‘27, Alice Baker ‘26, Matilda Drewett ‘27, and Sarah Marriott ‘28 returned to the world championships after success in previous years to once again represent their countries on the largest stage.

Highlighting Stanford's success in Duisburg were Annika Jeffery, Quincy Stone, Sumner Kerr, and Claire van Praagh, each earning gold medals representing the United States. Both Jeffery and van Praagh rowed in two boats for the US, collecting gold medals in the Women’s 4- and Mixed 8+ events. The duo held off a charging Great Britain, the reigning world champions in the W4-, to secure the USA's first gold medal in this event since 2022. Stone topped the podium with the US’ Women’s 8+, the first medal in the event for the US since 2023. Extinguishing a 19-year drought in the Women’s 4x, Kerr earned a gold medal with the United States’ Women’s 4x, the first top-three finish in the event since 2007. Brown raced as the bow seat of the US’ Women’s 2-, finishing sixth overall in a competitive A-Final. 

Four athletes brought home silver medals with Great Britain’s Women’s 8+, as nearly half of the boat contained Cardinal athletes with Baker, Drewett, Greenstock, and Shepherd sitting in the stern four. Also competing for GB was Fenton, winning the B-Final and finishing seventh overall in the Women’s 2-. 

Emma Bagrie raced for her home country of New Zealand, finishing sixth in the Women’s 4x. Sarah Marriott raced for the Australian Women’s 4-, earning an eighth-place finish.
