Early Goals Guide No. 1 Stanford to Ranked Win

No. 1 Stanford blanked No. 14 Georgetown 2-0 from Cagan Stadium

STANFORD, Calif. – Top-ranked Stanford scored twice in the first 10 minutes of play before holding on to shut out No. 14 Georgetown by a score of 2-0 in the Cardinal’s home opener on Thursday afternoon from Cagan Stadium.

With the win, Stanford improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while Georgetown dropped to 1-1-0 overall.

Freshman Ella Kral tallied her first career goal in the sixth minute, receiving a pass from Charlotte Kohler and firing a shot from distance that evaded the outstretched glove of Georgetown goalkeeper Reiley Fitzpatrick.

Kohler quickly added to Stanford’s lead in the 10th minute, cutting into the box where she was met in stride by a pass from fellow junior Lizzie Boamah. Kohler took one touch forward before unleashing a right-footed attempt from a difficult angle and pinning her shot inside the near post for her second goal in as many matches.

Despite the quick flurry of offense to start the match for Stanford, the two teams played relatively even throughout the remainder of the contest. The Cardinal managed a slim 9-4 advantage in shots, with Caroline Birkel and Fitzpatrick each recording a single goalkeeper save.

The Cardinal will return to action on Sunday when it welcomes UC Irvine to Cagan Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
