STANFORD, Calif — Calder Zirn scored the deciding goal with 90 seconds remaining, getting in front of a clearance attempt and watching the deflection roll into the back of the net to lift top-ranked Stanford to a 1-0 victory over No. 2 San Diego on Thursday evening.
Zirn’s late-game score broke a scoreless battle between the nation’s top two programs, as the Cardinal (3-0-0) held off the second-ranked Toreros (2-1-0) in a match highlighted by stout defensive performances from both sides.
The two programs combined for just three shots on goal, with neither side able to generate much offensively until the deciding moment with less than two minutes to play. The clean sheet improved Stanford to 8-1-1 all-time against San Diego.
"It was a really, really tough game," said Jeremy Gunn, the Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer. "San Diego was brilliant today, but we defended fantastically against a very good attack. I thought it was an unbelievable performance by everybody who played in the back four, and it was a phenomenal result after a gritty performance."
Stanford held a 6-2 shot advantage through 45 minutes, but it was Rowan Schnebly’s save in the 25th minute that proved to be the most notable moment of the half. Schnebly made a diving save to his right, denying a low drive from San Diego’s Oliver Rhoades.
Possession leaned San Diego’s way in the second half, but the Cardinal held firm inside the penalty box, with a defensive unit led by captain Dylan Groeneveld fending off five shots and three corner-kick chances in the final 45 minutes.
"I thought [Groeneveld] was absolutely monumental today," Gunn added. "There were a lot of questions asked of him, and he came through those questions with absolute flying colors."
Thursday’s result marked Stanford’s highest-ranked victory at Cagan Stadium since 2019, when another dramatic finish saw Zach Ryan score the game-winning header with 70 seconds remaining to defeat No. 3 Akron.
Stanford has now extended its regular season home unbeaten streak to 13 matches, opening the 2026 campaign with three victories over NCAA Tournament programs from a season ago.
"It’s been really exciting that we’ve found ways to win some really tough games," Gunn said. "It shows that we’ve got a strong backbone and that when someone puts us on the ropes, we can defend ourselves well and come back swinging."
