PITTSBURGH – Led by senior Jordyn Harvey, No. 5 Stanford opened the season with a 15-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-14 win over No. 6 Wisconsin in the second match of the Opening Spike Classic, Friday, at the Petersen Events Center.
Stanford (1-0) out hit Wisconsin (1-2), .258 to .164, and totaled seven aces, nine blocks and 71 digs. Kevin Hambly, the Montag Family Director of Women’s Volleyball, improved to 9-1 in season openers during his time on The Farm.
Harvey, an opposite from Salt Lake City, finished with a team-high 16 kills on .484 hitting, six digs, three blocks and three aces. Middle blocker Lizzy Andrew added nine kills and a match-best five blocks.
Sophomore setter Logan Parks controlled the Cardinal offense with 38 assists to go with 13 digs, four blocks and a kill. Libero Spencer Etzler collected 14 digs, five assists and two aces. The sophomore also registered a kill on an over pass in the second set.
Senior outside hitter Julia Blyashov posted a career-high 25 digs along with six kills and an ace. Sophomore middle blocker Erika Sayer had eight kills on 18 errorless swings to hit .444. She also tallied four blocks, two assists and a dig.
Senior Ipar Kurt chipped in with nine kills, three digs, two blocks and an assist. Junior Malyssa Cawa came off the bench as a serving sub in the third and fourth sets, finishing with two digs and an ace. Freshman Simone Roslon made her collegiate debut, totaling four digs.
The Badgers were led by Audrey Flanagan’s 17 kills, 12 digs and five aces. Setter Charlie Fuerbringer, whose father, Matt Fuerbringer, won a men's volleyball national title at Stanford in 1997, finished with 49 assists and 11 digs. Stanford is now 7-1 all-time against Wisconsin.
Stanford closes out the opening weekend on Sunday against No. 15 Kansas. First serve is slated for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN.
