FRISCO, Texas — Meja Örtengren made an incredible run during the final round of stroke play at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, climbing up the leaderboard to put herself in contention for medalist honors. Her efforts fell one stroke short, finishing in a tie for third, as Stanford failed to make the match play portion of the event.
Conditions were once again blistering and blustery at PGA Frisco, creating difficult play across the board for the field. Stanford continued to improve as a team, shooting +4 as a group on Tuesday, which was just one stroke back of the best team round of the day. Still, despite the significant improvement, the Cardinal could not get into the top four on the leaderboard to advance to match play.
The day got off to a hot start for Örtengren, who began the day one stroke over par. She birdied her first hole, and then three more times on her first nine to vault herself into contention heading onto her back nine.
She then recorded a double bogey on Hole 1, but bounced back with consecutive birdies on Holes 2 and 3. She then continued with the color on the scorecard with a bogey on 4 and a birdie on 5 before steadying the ship and finishing at par over her final four holes. Her 68 in the final round was the lowest round of the day and tied with Shyla Singh of Oregon for the best round in the tournament. Singh did that in the first round on Monday.
Anna Song was solid on Tuesday for the Cardinal, rebounding from an 80 in her first round to finish at par with a 72 on Tuesday. She had three birdies on her first five holes, knocking down birdies on 11, 12, and 14 for the first time this week. Her round featured five total birdies after having just two in 36 holes on Monday.
Stanford will miss the match play portion of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, ending their time in Frisco after three rounds of stroke play. The Cardinal will team up with Stanford men's golf for the annual Big Match against California on Sept. 24 at Menlo Country Club.
