STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford dropped the team’s first game of the season today, falling to No. 1 UCLA 11-10 on a last-second goal from the Bruins. The No. 3 Cardinal fell to 8-1 on the season, finishing second at the weekend’s Overnght MPSF Invitational.
The Card held UCLA to their lowest goal-scoring total of the season, led by Bernardo Herzer’s 14 saves in goal. Stanford’s defense finished with four field blocks and nine steals.
Stanford and the Bruins were knotted at five goals apiece at halftime, thanks to a pair of goals from Ben Forer. After UCLA retook the lead at 8-6 in the third, the Card rallied in the fourth to tie it at 8-8.
Forer converted a penalty, and Guido Leonardi scored to again tie the game – this time at 10-10 with just over a minute to go. The Bruins got the last word however, with Luka Gladovic putting the visitors ahead with just one second left on the clock.
Forer finished with six goals on the day, four of which came in the second half as the Cardinal battled back.
Stanford is back at home on Friday for a matchup with No. 11 San José State. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. PT in Avery Aquatic Center, with tickets still available at Tickets.GoStanford.com. The game will also be streamed on Overnght.
