Stanford Seventh at Olympia Fields

STANFORD, Calif — Edan Cui’s third straight par-or-under round highlighted a successful final round for the Stanford men’s golf team as the Cardinal wrapped up competition at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational on Saturday. Cui, who sat two strokes behind team-leader Jay Leng, helped Stanford to a 10-under final round as the Cardinal claimed seventh overall in one of the best collegiate golf fields this season. 

Cui entered the afternoon at 1-under after finishing the remnants of the second round earlier in the day, posting four birdies along the back nine. The sophomore then doubled-down with his best round by score in his collegiate career, earning a 5-under, 65 during Saturday’s finale by going bogey-free and ending his day on a high note with a birdie on his final hole. Cui, who ended the tournament at 10-under, sat just outside the top 20 in a tie for 23rd. 

Leading the Cardinal overall through the two-day tournament, Jay Leng secured three birdies and an eagle on the final day, ending the tournament with three-consecutive rounds in the 60s. Leng ended the two-day tournament at 8-under and slotted tied for 14th for his 12th collegiate top-20 finish. 

Giovanni Binaghi bookend the tournament with a pair of sub-70 rounds, besting Friday’s first round 1-under card with a 3-under, 67 on Saturday. The freshman rattled off five birdies during the round as he slotted second on the team during the third round with his third collegiate round in the 60s. Binaghi finished the tournament at 2-under and tied for 51st. 

Carlo Roman and Cooper Stearns also shot well for the Cardinal on Saturday with the former finishing his first collegiate tournament. Roman shot even on the final day after completing the second round this morning with a 3-under, 67 card for his best collegiate round while finishing the tournament at 1-under. 

Stearns, however, served as the reserve score on Saturday, going 2-over on the round to end the two-day tournament at even-par. Serving as the independent golfer, Daniel Zou secured his fourth sub-70 round this season with a 1-under card on Saturday, turning in a bogey-free round before ending the tournament at 1-over. 

Stanford is back in action on Thursday, September 24 for the annual Big Match against California. Stanford tees off against the Golden Bears from Menlo Country Club at noon on Thursday.
