STANFORD, Calif. – Olympic bronze medalist Alanna Smith has been selected to represent Australia at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin from September 4-13.
Australia opens Group C play against Puerto Rico at 2:30 a.m. PT on Friday, followed by Turkey at 2:30 a.m. PT on Sunday, and Belgium at 2:30 a.m. PT on Monday, September 7.
This will be Smith’s second go-around at a FIBA World Cup, which is contested every four years. She was the only collegian on Australia’s team at the 2018 World Cup in Spain prior to her senior season at Stanford. Smith averaged 6.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in six games to help Australia win silver, including a team-high 10 points in the final against the United States.
Smith was named the 2025 WNBA Co-Defensive Player of the Year and won bronze with Australia at the Paris Summer Games in 2024. She is one of six Stanford players to appear in a FIBA World Cup, along with Americans Jayne Appel (2010), Jennifer Azzi (1990, 1994, 1998), Sonja Henning (1990) and Nneka Ogwumike (2014, 2018), and Enjoli Izidor, who played for Nigeria in 2006.
Rising junior Shay Ijiwoye earned her spot and was initially named to Nigeria’s World Cup roster following a month of training with that country’s national team but won’t be competing in Berlin due to a roster eligibility technicality.
