STANFORD, Calif (AP) — Darian Mensah threw five touchdown passes in his Miami debut, Malachi Toney set a school-record with 234 yards receiving and the seventh-ranked Hurricanes opened their season with an 45-6 victory over Stanford on Friday night.
Mensah and Toney connected on touchdown passes on the first two drives of the game for Miami (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) and then again on a 47-yarder in the third quarter that set the school record.Â
Davis Warren threw for 214 yards for Stanford but couldn't get the Cardinal in the end zone after leading them to a 37-27 win over Hawaii in his Cardinal debut last week.
The Cardinal put together a promising second drive of the game that spanned 10 plays and covered 63 yards, but ended in a field goal, making it a 7-3 Hurricanes lead at the time. Stanford would punt on its next three drives, however, stalling out on offense with a pair of three-and-outs.Â
Despite the struggles on offense, Stanford failed to turn the ball over for the second consecutive game, once again winning the turnover battle thanks to a Charlie Eckhardt interception in the fourth quarter.
In his season debut, Caden High caught six passes for 92 yards to lead Stanford. Benji Blackburn set a career-high in receptions with seven.
The Cardinal heads into its first bye week, then returns to action on September 19, traveling to Durham, North Carolina, to take on the Duke Blue Devils.
