STANFORD, Calif. – Fifteen different Cardinal scored and No. 1 Stanford routed No. 17 Santa Clara, 22-9, at Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Only three dark caps had multi-goal games in Connor Ohl (4), Ryan Ohl (3) and Max Zelkov (3), as Stanford spread the wealth.
Connor Ohl scored Stanford’s first two of the day and then Will Schneider rattled the cage to make it 3-0 midway through the first. Santa Clara would score to make it 3-1 before the Cardinal scored 10 unanswered to put the game out of reach.
The defining run began with a steal from James Rozolis-Hill at the top of Santa Clara’s attack. Rozolis-Hill raced down the pool on the counter and beat the Bronco keeper to the left post with 2:06 to go in the opening period.
Stanford scored six in each of the first and second quarters and had its best showing in the third, when it scored seven, including a cross-cage rocket from Zelikov with 4:03 on the clock for his second of the game.
Late in that frame, Konstantinos Mathiopoulos got on the board when he drew an exclusion on Santa Clara’s Jamie de Zwart and took advantage himself, scoring in the 6-on-5 to push the Cardinal lead to 18-5.
Stanford’s 22 goals were the fourth time this season the team has passed to 20-goal threshold, joining wins over UC Irvine (22-12), UC Santa Barbara (24-13) and an earlier win against the same Santa Clara squad (21-4).
The Cardinal returns to action on Saturday, October 17 when it plays at rival and No. 4 California at 1 p.m.
