NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Cardinal took second at the Stu Nelson Trophy this weekend, and took first at the Open ACC Round 1.
“A short event in Connecticut feels a bit like a missed opportunity," said head coach Chris Klevan. "I think the group would agree, we left a lot of points on the racecourse. However, it is also clear we are one of the best teams in the country. I hope the result leaves us wanting more.”
The Cardinal's 65 points came up just short of first-place Brown's 60. The A boat, featuring Samara Walshe and Kit Harned, took sixth with 28 points. The B boat of Alice Schmid and Avery Peterson took fourth with 25 points, winning one of five races and adding in a second-place finish as well.
Stanford's C boat was sharp, finishing first in the division with 12 points. Ava McAliley and Alexandra Jones totaled 12 points, winning two of five races.
Meanwhile, in Maryland, the Cardinal dominated the Open ACC Round 1 competition.
“I’m super proud of the way the team sailed this weekend. We started exceptionally well and put ourselves in positions to succeed," said assistant coach Shawn Harvey. "Reade and Callie have been incredible this season and I’m looking forward to seeing how they progress the rest of the year; I know they have what it takes.”
Stanford's 108 points were well clear of the next-best squad, St. Mary's with 158. Both boats won their division – the A boat of Reade Decker and Callie Hammond with 44 points and the B boat of Freddie Parkin and Estella Morris with 64.
The A boat finished with five first-place finishes, while the B boat finished with three.
Next up for Stanford is the Nevins Trophy and Captain Hurst Bowl, both running from Oct. 17-18.
