Grumet Qualifies for NCAA Singles Championship

Grumet was a co-champion of the ITA Northwest Regional

SEATTLE – Punching his ticket to the NCAA Singles Championship in November, Gus Grumet went 5-0 through the singles bracket as a co-champion of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

Grumet posted wins on five consecutive days to reach the tournament final, which was canceled to leave him as a co-champion with Cal’s Lenn Luemkemann. Grumet won all 10 sets throughout his five matches, defeating opponents from Saint Mary’s, Portland, Washington and Santa Clara to reach the quarterfinals. As multiple Stanford players saw success in the tournament, Grumet punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a win over his teammate, fellow freshman Ronit Karki, in the semifinals, 6-3, 7-5.

Karki went 4-1 en route to his semifinal appearance, along with teammate Nico Godsick, who reached the semifinals on the opposite side of the bracket. Karki downed foes from Oregon, Washington, California and Santa Clara, while Godsick picked up wins over Portland State, California, Santa Clara and Washington.

Godsick also made the semifinals of the tournament in doubles, alongside Hudson Rivera. The duo, ranked 21st nationally, scored wins over pairs from Gonzaga, Oregon and Santa Clara before falling in the semifinals to a tandem from Washington.

Rivera, Nathan Barki and Mark Krupkin also competed for Stanford in singles, while Krupkin teamed with Karki for a 1-1 record in doubles.

Stanford returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 5 with the ITA Sectional Championships, hosted by Arizona State, and the ITA Conference Masters tournament, hosted in Rome, Georgia. The NCAA Singles Championships are set for Nov. 17-22 in Athens, Georgia.
