SAN FRANCISCO – The second tournament of the fall has been completed for Stanford men’s tennis, with Gus Grumet and Mark Krupkin advancing to the semifinals as a doubles pair.
Making their collegiate and season debuts, respectively, Grumet and Krupkin opened with an 8-6 win in the round of 16 over Arizona State’s pair of Ofek Shimanov and Niels Villard before reaching the semifinals after defeating TCU’s Albert Pedrico Kravtsov and Kaj Quirijns, 8-3, in the quarterfinals. The pair was tripped up in the semifinals, 8-6, by a pair from Michigan State.
Both players were knocked out of the singles bracket in the round of 32, and despite competitive matches in the consolation bracket – including a 19-17 tiebreaker for Grumet – both players left the event without a singles victory.
Stanford returns to the court in Seattle at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Oct. 15-20. The singles finalists and doubles champion from each region will qualify for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
