GLENCOE, Ill. — Stanford women’s golf is looking like the defending national champions once again, shaking off its performance from the Jackson T. Stephens Cup with authority. The Cardinal began the Windy City Classic on Monday, playing 36 holes at Lake Shore Country Club. As was the case in its last stroke-play tournament, the Cardinal began slowly, but found its footing quickly, ending Monday’s play with an eight-stroke lead over the field.
Stanford as a team shot 3-over in the opening round, with the team’s lineup shooting a 287 on the par-71 course. That put Stanford in fifth overall, but they quickly got into the top spot on the leaderboard with a hot second round. The Cardinal shot a 272 (-12) in the second round of the day, pulling out to an eight-stroke lead over Oregon (-1). Stanford and Oregon are the only teams under par after 36 holes; Virginia is next closest in third at +4, while Purdue (+7) and Duke (+10) round out the top five.
There’s a crowd of Cardinal competing for individual medalist honors, with Andrea Revuelta having the best case amongst teammates. She sits in outright second at the end of the day at five-under, with rounds of 71 and 66 on her scorecard. As was the case in her first tournament of the season, she was up-and-down in the first round, with four birdies but four bogeys. Revuelta got it turned around quickly in the second round, however, playing clean over her final 16 holes and knocking down six birdie putts in the afternoon portion of the day.
For Revuelta, it was a welcome return to form after she shot no better than 74 over three rounds at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup. In 55 collegiate rounds, Revuelta has now shot in the 60s a whopping 21 times, with her 66 (-5) in the second round finishing one shy of a career low.
In the first round, Meja Örtengren was the team’s drop score with a 74 (+3). In the second round, she shot the best round of the tournament with a 65 (-6). Had Örtengren not bogeyed on 17, her final round of the day would have been a clean round. She piled up seven birdies, including four birdies between holes 10-15 after she made her final turn of the day. It was a spectacular turnaround from her opening round, where she birdied her second hole and then didn’t record another birdie in the round.
Örtengren had a similar rise up the leaderboard at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, where she came on strong in the final round and nearly put herself in contention for a win, shooting a 68 in the final round to finish one stroke off medalist honors. Entering the final round tomorrow, she is four strokes shy of first.
Strong starts were the name of the game for Anna Song, who had four of her five birdies on Monday on the front nine, including consecutive birdies to open round two. Song posted scores of 71 and 70 to finish one-under on the day, holding a share of seventh place individually.
Nikki Oh and Paula MartÃn Sampedro are both tied for 13th overall at two-over through 36 holes. Oh had a strong bounce back in the second round on Tuesday, with three consecutive birdies on holes 11-13, part of a 71 she shot.
Stanford will tee off at 6:24 a.m. PT in the final round on Tuesday, looking to secure its first team title of the season.
