First Team Title of the Season

Stanford wins by six strokes over two ACC foes

GLENCOE, Ill. — For the first time this season, Stanford women’s golf is in the win column in a stroke-play tournament. The Cardinal battled through three rounds in the Windy City Classic and came out on top, finishing with a six-stroke win over ACC rivals Virginia and Duke.

Conditions were tricky on the final day of the tournament, with scores matching round one of the tournament, where every team finished at par or worse. That held true during the third round, where only Duke shot even par as a team. The next closest team was Virginia at +6. Stanford shot +13 on the day, but still managed to win by six strokes thanks to the cushion it had built with its -12 in the second round.

Through six rounds of stroke play this year, the Cardinal has only shot under par once as a team, surprising, considering it has three of the top in the World Amateur Golf Rankings on the roster. Regardless, winning a tournament that features NCAA contenders like Virginia, Duke, Oregon, and others, and doing so with a comfortable margin, is what matters most.

Stanford entered the day with two individuals in contention for medalist honors. Meja Örtengren came closest, finishing at even par over three rounds after shooting a 74 in the final round. She wound up finishing seven strokes off the win after Jaclyn LaHa of Virginia went for a 67 to secure the win by three strokes over Oregon’s Celina Yeo. It was another top-five finish for Örtengren, who finished in outright fourth and has been a top-five finisher in both tournaments this year.

Andrea Revuelta was the other Cardinal in contention, entering the day one stroke off the lead. After recording pars on her first four holes, things slipped away from Revuelta, who eventually shot a 78 in the final round, settling for a share of fifth place overall. Her round ended with a birdie on 18, though, and that one shot could give her some much-needed momentum heading into Stanford’s home tournament next weekend.

Joining Revuelta in fifth place was Nikki Oh, who had the best day for any Cardinal golfer. She finished with an even-par 71 in the final round, thanks to three birdies, the most by any Card on Tuesday. After starting the day +1 through four holes, she birdied on holes five and seven, and added her third birdie on 12. It is the second 71 in a row shot by Oh, just one of two Stanford golfers to be at par or better in two rounds this week.

Stanford returns home and hosts the annual Stanford Intercollegiate, hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, on Oct. 16-18. The entire field will once again be supporting the PlayForHer campaign, raising funds for breast cancer research. This year’s honoree is LPGA Class A teaching instructor Christine Romer. All funds raised will go directly to Dr. Melinda Telli of the Stanford Breast Cancer Center.
