Stanford Now In First Place In Sears Directors' Cup Standings

Six-time defending champion Stanford leads second place Wisconsin by 140 points.

April 18, 2001

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Stanford University moved a step closer toward its seventh consecutive Division I Sears Directors' Cup Championship by taking its first lead of the 2000-01 season, as of the second winter standings period.

The Cardinal currently has 781.5 points, to lead second place Wisconsin by 140 points as the winter season draws to a close. Rounding out the top 10 are Michigan (595.5), Ohio State (568.5), Penn State (561.5), Nebraska (535.5), Arizona (529.5), North Carolina (514), UCLA (500.5) and Florida (482).

Stanford jumped into the lead for the first time this year thanks to top five national finishes from men's swimming and diving (2nd), women's swimming and diving (2nd), co-ed fencing (4th), men's basketball (5th) and men's indoor track and field (5th). The Cardinal also received points from men's gymnastics (11th), women's basketball (17th) and women's indoor track and field (31st).

The Sears' Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.

The final winter standings will be released on April 25, following the conclusion of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships. The Cardinal women's gymnastics program is one of 12 schools competing for the national title this weekend in Athens, Georgia.
