Stanford A.D. honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics/Continental Airlines and Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University's Ted Leland has been honored as National Athletic Director of the Year by both the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal.
Leland was one of 25 Athletic Directors given the NACDA/Continental Airlines A.D. of the Year Award. NACDA chose four regional winners - Northeast, Southeast, Central and West - in six different categories along with one international winner. The categories were Division I-A, Division I-AA, Division II, Division III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior/Community Colleges. Leland was named the Division I-A West Regional winner, and accepted the honor earlier this week at NACDA's Annual Convention in Salt Lake City.
From the 25 regional winners, the Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal then selected Leland as its National Athletic Director of the Year in its June 11-17 issue.
The criteria for the NACDA Award were service as an Athletic Director for a minimum of five academic years, demonstration of commitment to higher education and student-athletes, continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence, and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to high levels of accomplishments.
Leland just completed his 10th year at Stanford, and during his tenure, has led the university to seven consecutive Division I Sears Directors' Cups as the best overall collegiate athletic program in the country. Stanford has won 38 national team championships since Leland's arrival, including an NCAA record six in 1996-97. Leland oversees a department that includes 33 intercollegiate varsity teams - 15 men's, 17 women's and one coed - plus the physical education department, intramurals, club sports, open recreation and the Stanford Golf Course.
