June 5, 2001

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Stanford University has extended its Sears Directors' Cup lead to nearly 200 points as of the first set of Division I spring standings on May 31. The Cardinal is seeking its seventh consecutive Sears Directors' Cup, which is emblematic of the nation's best overall collegiate athletic program.

As of May 31, the Cardinal owns a 195.5-point lead over second place UCLA (1,094.5-899). Rounding out the top 10 are Michigan (814.5), Ohio State (781), Florida (677), Penn State (668), Nebraska (663), Arizona (658.5), Georgia (646) and Wisconsin (641.5). In the final winter standings (April 18th), Stanford held a 140-point lead over second place Wisconsin (781.5-641.5).

Stanford added to its lead thanks to top 10 national finishes from three women's programs - tennis, water polo and golf. The tennis program won its 11 NCAA Team Championship, while water polo finished second and golf ninth.

The Sears' Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.
