Tucson, Ariz. - Stanford sophomore outfielders Sam Fuld and Carlos Quentin have been named as part of a first group of 19 players invited to participate in the 2002 USA Baseball National Team Trials in Tucson, AZ, June 18-23. The final roster will be selected from an eventual pool of 35-40 players. The 2002 national squad begins its season on June 24 and will finish the campaign at the FISU World Championships in Italy from August 3-11.
Fuld is currently hitting .349 with two homers, 23 RBI and three stolen bases through the first 38 games of the 2002 season. Last year, he hit .357 with 37 RBI and 11 stolen bases to earn Third Team All-American (NCBWA), Second Team Freshman All-American (Baseball America) and All-Pac-10 honors. He currently ranks tied for sixth on Stanford's all-time batting average list with a .353 career mark.
Quentin is hitting .340 with eight homers, 37 RBI and seven stolen bases this season. Last year, he was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, in addition to earning First Team Freshman All-American and All-Pac-10 honors after hitting .345 with 11 homers, 52 RBI and five stolen bases.
Fuld and Quentin were both members of the 2001 USA Team. Fuld hit .310 and played in all 29 games with 26 starts. Quentin hit .267 with five doubles, a homer, nine RBI and a stolen base.
Other invitees among the first 19 players include Michael Aubrey (So., INF, Tulane), Kyle Bakker (So., LHP, Georgia Tech), Chad Cordero (So., RHP, Cal State Fullerton), Aaron Hill (So., INF, Louisiana State), Philip Humber (Fr., RHP, Rice), Conor Jackson (So., INF, California), Paul Maholm (So., LHP, Mississippi State), Tim Moss (So., INF, Texas), Matt Murton (So., OF, Georgia Tech), Eric Patterson (Fr., INF, Georgia Tech), Landon Powell (So., C, South Carolina), Omar Quintanilla (So., INF, Texas), Kyle Sleeth (So., RHP, Wake Forest), Tim Stauffer (So., RHP, Richmond), Brad Sullivan (So., RHP, Houston), Richie Weeks (So., OF, Southern) and Bob Zimmerman (So., RHP, Southwest Missouri State).
The 2002 USA Baseball National Team will be coached by Lelo Prado (Louisville head coach) with assistants Terry Alexander (Jacksonville assistant coach), Sunny Galloway (Oral Roberts assistant coach) and Terry Rupp (Maryland assistant coach).
