Stanford and Arizona conclude their three-game series today (1 pm, MT, 1 pm, PT) with the Cardinal looking for its third sweep of the season ... Stanford has previous sweeps this season over Cal Poly (3/1 - 3/3) and at USC (3/23 - 3/24) and has won 11 consecutive regular season series ... The streak started last year when the Cardinal defeated Arizona two-of-three games at Sunken Diamond (5/11-5/13/01) ... Stanford has also won 27 of its last 29 regular season series ... The Cardinal outlasted Arizona, 5-4, in a marathon 18 inning series-opener that lasted five hours and 19 minutes before rolling to a 19-1 win yesterday ... Stanford's 19 runs and 26 hits versus Arizona yesterday were both season-highs ... Stanford has won four straight games and will be looking for its third five-game win streak of the season today ... Stanford has improved to 9-0 in series-openers ... STANFORD BASEBALL QUICK INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Today's scheduled starter John Hudgins has won four straight starts and tossed Stanford's only complete game of the season in his most recent effort, a 7-2 win over Texas (3/30) ... Jason Cooper continues to lead the team with a .390 batting average and co-leads the team with 27 RBI, while Ryan Garko paces the club with six homers and Donny Lucy also has 27 RBI ... Sam Fuld leads the team in both hits (43) and doubles (12), while Brian Hall paces the club with seven stolen bases ... Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie, Tim Cunningham and Hudgins is a combined 16-1 with a 3.06 ERA ... Guthrie has won 11 consecutive decisions, while leading the team in strikeouts (58) and innings pitched (64.1) ... Chris O'Riordan (.355) and Sam Fuld (.349) are currently ranked fifth and tied for ninth on Stanford's career batting average list ... Fuld (6 RBI), O'Riordan (2 HR) and Tobin Swope (5 hits) all set new career-bests in yesterday's 19-1 win over Arizona, while Carlos Quentin tied a career-high four hits.
STANFORD-ARIZONA BASEBALL NOTES AND HISTORY
Stanford has opened its 2002 Pac-10 season with a pair of victories over Arizona in the first two games of this series (5-4 in 18 innings, 19-1). Stanford has won four in a row and 14 of its last 16 games, while Arizona has struggled of late with 10 losses in the last 14 games after a 17-4 start. Stanford won two-of-three games played between the teams last year at Sunken Diamond, opening the three-game series with a 6-5 win (5/11) and closing the series with an 8-2 victory (5/13). The Wildcats picked up a 5-4 win in the middle game of the series (5/12). Stanford swept Arizona the last time the teams played in Tucson (3/26-3/28/99, 8-4, 12-4, 12-11) and has won seven in a row between the clubs at Arizona with the last Wildcat victory coming 9-5 on April 17, 1998. Stanford leads the all-time series, 90-49.
2002 STANFORD-ARIZONA FRIDAY AND SATURDAY REVIEW
Stanford 5, at Arizona 4 -- 18 innings (April 5, 2002) - Chris Carter raced home from third base on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the 18th inning as Stanford outlasted Arizona by a final score of 5-4 in an 18-inning marathon that lasted 5:19. Carter doubled to lead off the top of the 18th inning, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on the passed ball by Wildcat catcher Chris Cunningham. Andy Topham (5-8, HR, RBI) led Stanford's offensive attack with a career-high five hits. Ryan McCally (2-0) picked up the victory. Moises Duran (3-5, HR, RBI) and Brad Hassey (3-7) had three hits each for the Wildcats. Arizona's Pat Reilly set a new NCAA Division I single-game record with 29 putouts.

Stanford 19, at Arizona 1 -- (April 6, 2002) - Stanford exploded for a 19-1 victory over Arizona by producing season-highs in both runs and hits (26). Sam Fuld (3-5, 2B, 3B, HR, 6 RBI) drove in a career-best six runs, while Chris O'Riordan (3-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI) had the first two-homer game of his career and Tobin Swope (5-5, 2B, 3 RBI) picked up a career-high five hits. Carlos Quentin (4-6, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) also tied a career-best with four hits. Tim Cunningham (5-1) earned the victory by limiting the Wildcats to five hits and one run over the first 7.0 innings.
