STANFORD-UCLA BASEBALL SERIES PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford will travel to UCLA for its final three regular season road games of the regular season this Friday-Sunday, May 17-19 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PDT). Stanford has won six of its last seven Pac-10 games to improve its Pac-10 record to 11-7 and rise into a second place tie in the Pac-10 standings with Washington, 2.0 games behind league leader USC (13-5 Pac-10). UCLA won two-of-three games at Arizona in its most recent Pac-10 series last Friday-Sunday and has won three straight overall. Stanford won two-of-three games between the teams at Sunken Diamond last season (4/7-4/8/01). The teams split a doubleheader to open the series with a 6-4 UCLA victory in the opener and a 9-0 Cardinal win in the nightcap. Stanford won the rubber game of the series, 11-2. Stanford also won two-of-three games between the teams at Sunken Diamond in 2000 and at UCLA in 1999. Stanford swept all six games from the Bruins in 1998 with the last Bruin series victory coming in 1997 when UCLA won two-of-three in both series versus the Cardinal that season. Stanford leads the all-time series, 174-131.

Stanford came up with an 11-2 victory over UCLA to win its 16th straight regular season series. Mike Gosling earned the victory in his first Pac-10 start of the season, giving up only three hits and one run. Jason VanMeetren (3-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and Sam Fuld (3-5, 2B) led the Cardinal offense. Arik VanZandt (2-4, HR, RBI), Scott Dragicevich (2-5, RBI) and Chris O'Riordan (2-5, 2 RBI) added two hits each for Stanford. UCLA starter Wade Clark (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in the first 2.2 innings. UCLA's Brian Baron went 2-for-4 for the Bruins.

Bruksch won for the seventh time in his last eight starts. Ryan McCally pitched a perfect ninth inning to complete the shutout. UCLA 6, at Stanford 4 -- Game 1 (April 7, 2001) - UCLA picked up a 6-4 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, which was necessary after Friday night's scheduled series opener was postponed due to rain. The Bruins handed Jeremy Guthrie his first loss of the season as the Cardinal right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) and eight hits in 7.0 innings, while striking out nine. The Bruins led 5-0 before Stanford rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to close within 5-4. However, Doug Silva came on in relief with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and struck out three of the five batters he faced to earn his second save of the season. Josh Karp (3-0) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out six and scattering five hits to earn the win. Josh Canales (3-4), Brian Baron (2-3, HR, 3 RBI), Matt Pearl (2-5) and Eric Reese (HR, RBI) led UCLA's offensive attack. TUESDAY'S STANFORD-NEVADA GAME REVIEW
at Nevada 13, Stanford 12 (May 14, 2002) - Ryan Garko had the first two-homer game of his career and tied a career-high with four runs scored to lead Stanford to a 13-2 victory over Santa Clara. Garko now has 11 homers this season, taking over the team lead. Stanford extended its win streak to four games and won three of four games in its season series against the Broncos. Six other Stanford hitters - Jason Cooper (2-3, 3B, 3 RBI, SB), Carlos Quentin (2-3, RBI, SB), Brian Hall (2-3, RBI, SB), Andy Topham (2-4, RBI, SB), Arik VanZandt (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Sam Fuld (2-6, HR, 2 RBI, SB) - had two hits each. Stanford tied a season-high with five stolen bases. Darin Naatjes picked up the win as the first of four Cardinal pitchers. A.J. LaBarbera (2-3) and Jim Wallace (2-4, 2B) had two hits each for the Broncos, while Joey Gomes hit his 28th double of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning.

LAST WEEK'S STANFORD-ARIZONA STATE GAME REVIEWS
at Stanford 3, Arizona State 1 (May 12, 2002) - Stanford moved into a second place tie in the Pac-10 standings with a 3-1 victory over Arizona State. Tim Cunningham picked up his first victory since April 6 by scattering seven hits over 7.0 scoreless innings, while Ryan McCally recorded his seventh save by getting Stanford out of a bases loaded ninth inning jam. Sam Fuld (3-4, 2B, 3B) posted his ninth multiple-hit game in the last 10 contests and his 15th in the last 17 to lead the Cardinal offense, while Chris O'Riordan hit his eighth home run of the season. Scott Dragicevich (2-3) added two hits for the Cardinal. Sergio Garcia (3-5, HR, SB, RBI) was the only Arizona State player with more than one hit. Robbie McClellan (7-5) suffered the loss for Arizona State, allowing three runs and six hits in 7.1 innings.

Jeremy West (3-3, 2B, 3 RBI) had three hits and Nick Cedena hit the game's only home run to lead the Sun Devils' offense. Mike Esposito (8-5) picked up the victory, holding the Cardinal scoreless on three hits over the first 5.0 innings. Ryan Schroyer scattered seven hits and allowed two runs over the final 4.0 innings to earn his fifth save of the season. Chris O'Riordan (3-4) led the Stanford offense, while Scott Dragicevich (2-4, 2B) and Brian Hall (2-5, 2B) added two hits each but the Cardinal left 14 runners stranded, its season-high for a nine inning game.

STANFORD REMAINS NO. 7 IN BASEBALL AMERICA POLL
Stanford remained No. 7 for the second straight week in this week's Baseball America poll released May 13 after winning three-of-four games last week. Stanford currently ranks No. 7 (Baseball Weekly/ESPN) and No. 9 (Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA) in the three other major national polls. Stanford began the season as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and stayed on top of the Baseball America poll for the first seven weeks of the year before falling out of the top spot for the first time on April 1. Stanford spent two weeks (4/9 - 4/16) last year as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and six weeks as Baseball America's top team (3/12 - 4/16) before finishing the year at No. 2 in all four polls. Stanford has been ranked No. 1 at one point during each of the past six years (including 2002). Stanford's poll history includes a run as "king of the polls" in 1998 when the team held the top spot in the Baseball America poll for the entire regular season (a record 14 consecutive weeks). USC (No. 19 Baseball America, No. 20 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 21 Collegiate Baseball, No. 23 NCBWA) and Arizona State (No. 20 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 32 NCBWA) are the other ranked Pac-10 teams.
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS
For the second consecutive season, the Cardinal struggled in the second half of April before playing well in May. Last year, the team struggled to a 3-5 record during its eight games in the second half of April before going 12-3 in May. This year, the team finished at 4-4 after the tax deadline and is 6-3 in its first nine games of May.
TOP OF THE PAC
Stanford has moved into a second place tie with Washington in the Pac-10 standings after winning six of its last seven Pac-10 games. The Cardinal and the Huskies both have 11-7 conference records and trail first place USC (13-5 Pac-10) by 2.0 games each. Stanford is trying to finish among the top two in the conference standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division) for the ninth straight year and the 20th time in the last 22 years with the only blemishes over that time period a fourth place finish in 1989 and a sixth place showing in 1993.
STANFORD WINS 21ST STRAIGHT REGULAR SEASON SERIES AT SUNKEN DIAMOND
Stanford won its 21st straight regular season series at Sunken Diamond by winning two-of-three games against Arizona State (5/10 - 5/12/02) last Friday-Sunday. The last team to win a series over Stanford at Sunken Diamond was USC with two-of-three wins April 16-18, 1999.
CARDINAL SHOOTING FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT 40-WIN SEASON
Stanford is within five victories of its eighth straight 40-win season. The last time the Cardinal didn't win 40 games was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993.

Stanford has been successful in one-run games and extra-inning contests this season. The Cardinal has posted an 8-5 record in one-run games and a 4-2 mark in extra-inning contests.

Stanford finished with a 6-2 record in eight midweek non-conference games after losing at Nevada, 13-12, in its final scheduled midweek non-conference game last Tuesday (5/14). Stanford won games versus Brigham Young (2/12, 8-1), USF (4/2, 4-1), San Jose State (4/9, 5-4), Saint Mary's (4/16, 19-2) and Sacramento State (4/24, 6-5), as well as at Santa Clara (5/7, 13-2). Stanford's other midweek non-conference loss was a 12-0 defeat at San Jose State (4/30).
STANFORD LEADS PAC-10 IN NINE TEAM CATEGORIES
Stanford leads the Pac-10 in nine team categories, including ERA (4.05) and fielding percentage (.971). Stanford also paces the conference in home runs (68), doubles (109), total bases (107), slugging percentage (.514), sacrifice flies (34) and saves (13, co-leader).
SLAMMIN' SAMMY ON A SERIOUS TEAR
Sam Fuld has extended his hot streak to 18 games in which he is hitting .526 (40-76) with 16 multiple-hit games over the period. Fuld has moved to the top of Stanford's career batting average list with a .370 lifetime mark (166-449). Fuld has also contributed four homers, 15 RBI, seven stolen bases and 25 runs scored during the stretch. For the season, he leads the club with a .383 batting average, 85 hits, 14 doubles (co-leader), 222 at bats, a .441 on base percentage, 30 multiple-hit games, 10 three-hit games and three four-hit games.
SAM FULD LEADING CARDINAL IN PAC-10 PLAY
Sam Fuld has been Stanford's top hitter among regulars in Pac-10 action with a .397 batting average (31-78) in 18 Pac-10 games. Fuld also leads the team in hits (31), runs scored (24) and stolen bases (7) during conference action, while ranking second on the club in homers (4) and tied for second in RBI (18).
RYAN GARKO TAKES OVER TEAM HOME RUN LEAD
Ryan Garko has moved into the team lead for home runs with 12 after hitting three homers in four games last week, including the first two-homer game of his career in a 13-2 win at Santa Clara (5/7).
TRIO PRODUCING RUNS
Ryan Garko, Jason Cooper and Carlos Quentin have combined to drive in 137 runs in 50 games this season. Quentin currently leads the group with 49 RBI, while Garko (45) and Cooper (43) are close behind.

Chris O'Riordan currently ranks tied for fifth on Stanford's career batting average list. O'Riordan has a career batting average of .355 (246-692).
JEREMY GUTHRIE TOSSES THIRD STRAIGHT COMPLETE GAME
Jeremy Guthrie tossed his third straight complete game and earned a victory in a 5-3 win over Arizona State (5/10) in his last outing. Guthrie has now won 13 of his last 14 decisions. He had won 11 straight decisions before taking the loss despite throwing his first complete game of the season in a 3-1 loss at Oregon State (4/26).

CHRIS O'RIORDAN EXTENDS GAMES STARTED STREAK TO 161
Chris O'Riordan has extended his string of consecutive games started at second base to 161. O'Riordan also had a couple of other notable streaks earlier this season, hitting safely in a career-high 12 straight games (4/5 - 4/21) and reaching base in 38 straight contests (2/1 - 4/21) before having both streaks snapped when he went 0-for-4 without reaching base in the series opener at Oregon State (4/26).

Stanford surpassed its home run total of last season when the Cardinal hit its 68th homer as a team at Nevada (5/14).
RUNNING OVER THE OPPOSITION
Stanford has stolen 15 bases in its last eight games and has more than doubled its opponents stolen base total this season with 63 thefts compared to 31 for its opponents. Brian Hall leads the club with 12 stolen bases and is a perfect 12-for-12 this season. Stanford's first and only losing streak of the year came when the Cardinal dropped the first two games at Oregon State (4/26 - 4/27). The Cardinal snapped out of the streak with a 13-0 win at Oregon State (4/28) in the series finale and has won seven of the 10 games since the two consecutive losses.
STANFORD SETS NEW SEASON-HIGH ATTENDANCE RECORD
The big crowds at Sunken Diamond reached a new high point this year when the Cardinal drew a season-high 4143 fans for its series finale versus California (5/5). Stanford is averaging 2671 fans per game through its first 25 home contests this season an increase of 656 fans per game to its average of 2015 fans through 25 games last year.

STANFORD BASEBALL HISTORY
Stanford's storied baseball program has had many highlights as the program is in its 109th season with an all-time record of 2314-1463-32 (.612). The Cardinal won NCAA titles in 1987 and 1988 before returning to the CWS championship game in each of the last two years (2000, 2001). The program has had winning seasons in 37 of its last 38 campaigns and 54 of its last 56 seasons (including this year), has recorded three straight 50-win seasons for the first time in school history (1999-2001) and has reached the 40-win mark in seven consecutive campaigns (1995-2001). Just a few of the other highlights have included 13 College World Series appearances, 18 conference titles and 22 NCAA Tournament berths. Stanford has boasted a total of 43 All-Americans who have earned a total of 50 All-American honors. Stanford has also garnered three NCAA Player of the Year choices in Jeff Austin (1998), David McCarty (1991) and Steve Dunning (1970). Other numbers for the Cardinal Baseball program include 96 All-Conference players earning a total of 121 All-Conference honors, 57 major league players and 12 first round draft picks in the last 15 years.
OFFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's team batting average currently sits at .322 and has been at .315 or higher all season. Stanford has raised its mark from a season-low .315 after a game at Arizona (4/5) with double figure hits in 15 of its last 24 games. Stanford has had a pair of season-high-tying 19-run games in a 19-2 win versus Saint Mary's (4/16) and a 19-1 win at Arizona (4/6) with a season-high 26 hits in the latter. Stanford has scored double-digit runs 15 times and is averaging 8.0 runs per game. The team also has double-digit hits in 33 of its 50 games. Brian Hall leads the club with 12 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Scott Dragicevich has the team's longest current hit streak at eight games (5/3 - 5/14). Dragicevich (.353), Cooper (.347), Chris O'Riordan (.340), Quentin (.335), Garko (.319), Andy Topham (.317) and Arik VanZandt (.311) are other regulars hitting above .300.
PITCHING REPORT
Stanford's ERA currently sits at 4.24 through its first 50 games, its highest mark since it sat at 4.26 after a 15-4 win over California on March 8. Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (8-1, 2.91, 105.1 IP, 96 SO), John Hudgins (8-1, 5.03, 78.2 IP, 52 SO) and Tim Cunningham (6-2, 3.97, 81.2 IP, 48 SO) is a combined 22-4 with a 3.86 ERA. Guthrie and Hudgins co-lead the team in victories, while Guthrie paces the club in complete games (3), innings pitched and strikeouts. Hudgins recorded his first career shutout and the team's only shutout at Oregon State (4/28). Guthrie has the team's longest performance of the year with a career-high 10.0 innings pitched at Arizona (4/5) in an eventual 18-inning 5-4 Stanford win. Ryan McCally (4-3, 3.38, 7 SV, 40.0 IP, 33 SO) has been the team's top reliever this year with seven saves, second in the Pac-10. Dan Rich (1-1, 2.25, 2 SV, 24.0 IP, 27 SO) and Darin Naatjes (4-0, 2.79, 2 SV, 19.1 IP, 23 SO) have emerged as two of the club's top relievers. Others pitching primarily out of the bullpen include Jonny Dyer (2-0, 4.38, 12.1 IP, 8 SO), David O'Hagan (0-0, 5.11, 12.1 IP, 8 SO), Drew Ehrlich (0-2, 5.59, 2 SV, 38.2 IP, 39 SO), J.D. Willcox (2-1, 6.59, 13.2 IP, 4 SO) and Mark Jecmen (0-4, 8.26, 28.1 IP, 19 SO).
DEFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's fielding percentage currently sits at .971, tied for its best of the year and only .006 percentage points below last year's .977 school record and nation's best mark. Stanford has been errorless in three of its last seven and eight of its last 19 games overall, as well as a total of 17 games this year. Ryan Garko leads the club with 314 putouts, while Chris O'Riordan has a team-high 170 assists. The Cardinal has turned 59 double plays, including a season-high four at Fresno State (2/18). STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 26th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2002. Marquess has a career record of 1081-530-5 (.670), all at Stanford. Marquess coached his 1600th game at Stanford this season in a 19-2 win over Saint Mary's (4/16). Last year, he became the 23rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the 1000-win mark with a 6-2 victory over Florida State in a game played on February 9, 2001. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles (1987, '88) and two other CWS title game appearances (2000, '01), as well as 11 College World Series appearances (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 11 NCAA Regional titles (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles (1983, '84, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99, 2000) and three NCAA Super Regional championships (1999, 2000, '01). The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 19 times under Marquess. He began the 2002 season ranked 12th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches, while ranking 23rd on the all-time victory list and 42nd on the all-time winning percentage list. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times (1985, '87, '88) and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions (1983, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99). The Cardinal has posted winning seasons 25 times in 26 years under his leadership (includes this season) and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 19 times in the last 21 years. Stanford has had 99 professional baseball draft picks in the past 17 seasons, including 12 first round selections in the last 15 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 26th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his third season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis (3rd season) handles the Cardinal pitching staff, while Dave Nakama (3rd season) returns as an assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach at San Francisco State. Nakama, also a Cardinal assistant in 1997 and 1998, assists with all aspects of the game and serves as Stanford's first base coach.
