Stanford, Calif. - Stanford junior righthanded pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (Ashland, OR/Ashland HS) has been named one of five finalists for the prestigious 2002 Golden Spikes Award. Guthrie also earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday.
"It's a great honor to be recognized as one of the finalists for the Golden Spikes Award," said Guthrie. "There are so many great and deserving players across the nation that it is humbling to be singled out from among this group."
"It's an honor for Jeremy Guthrie and for Stanford University that he has been named as one of the finalists for the Golden Spikes award," added Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "This is college baseball's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy. We hope that he will have as good of a chance as anybody to win the honor."
Guthrie has compiled a 9-1 record and a 2.68 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 114.1 innings this season. He has pitched four consecutive complete games and picked up his first shutout of the campaign in his most recent outing at UCLA, striking out a career-high 13 batters and tossing a six-hitter in an 11-0 Stanford victory.
Guthrie has posted a 22-5 career record with a 2.75 ERA in less than two full seasons at Stanford, recording 237 strikeouts in 248.1 innings pitched.
Guthrie is the ninth finalist for the Golden Spikes Award in Stanford history.
Other finalists for the award include Russ Adams (North Carolina, INF, Jr.), Jeff Baker (Clemson, INF, Jr.), Bobby Brownlie (Rutgers, RHP, Jr.) and Khalil Greene (Clemson, INF, Sr.).
The 2002 Golden Spikes Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, July 9, during the premier broadcast of the 25th Anniversary Golden Spikes Award show.

Guthrie's selection as one of three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week was his second career selection as a National Player of the Week. He won NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week honors on February 13, 2001.
Guthrie was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for the third time in his career. He was also selected in back-to-back weeks last season on March 6 and 13, 2001. Stanford has now won the honor in back-to-back weeks (Tim Cunningham - May 13, 2002) and 60 times in school history.
No. 8 Stanford (37-16, 13-8 Pac-10) will conclude the regular season by hosting Washington State in a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, May 24-26 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PDT). The Cardinal currently sits in a second place tie with Washington in the conference standings, 1.0 games behind first place USC (14-7 Pac-10) with three conference games remaining.
