PAC-10 RACE BREAKDOWN
Stanford (13-8 Pac-10) heads into its final three games of the regular season tied for second place with Washington (13-8 Pac-10), 1.0 games behind league leader USC (14-7 Pac-10) and 1.0 games ahead of fourth place Arizona State (12-9 Pac-10). Stanford will host Washington State in a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, while Washington will host Arizona, USC will visit UCLA and Arizona State will host Oregon State. USC will win the Pac-10 title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA tournament outright if it wins all three games. Tiebreakers for two teams are determined by head-to-head conference records between the teams. If more than two teams are tied, the first criteria is the combined conference head-to-head records against all tied teams. The next criteria is conference record against the next highest team in the standings and continuing in descending order.

STANFORD-WASHINGTON STATE BASEBALL SERIES PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford will host Washington State for its final three regular season games this Friday-Sunday, May 24-26 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PDT). Stanford has won eight of its last 10 Pac-10 games to improve its conference record to 13-8 and rise into a second place tie in the Pac-10 standings with Washington, 1.0 game behind league leader USC (14-7 Pac-10). Washington State is currently in last place in the Pac-10 but has managed a 5-4 record in Pac-10 road games and won two-of-three at Arizona last Friday-Sunday. Stanford has swept all nine games between the teams since the Pac-10 expanded to included Washington State prior to the 1999 season. Last year, Stanford swept a three-game set in Pullman (14-6, 19-3, 12-1). Stanford leads the all-time series, 17-13.

at Stanford 12, Washington 1 (May 20, 2001) - Stanford closed out its 2001 regular season with a 12-1 win at Washington State. Mike Gosling won his seventh consecutive Pac-10 game, limiting the Cougars to four hits and one run in the first 5.0 innings. Gosling struck out five and walked just one. Jason Cooper (4-5, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Stanford offense. Chris O'Riordan (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Arik VanZandt (2-4, RBI) added two hits each for the Cardinal. Andy Topham also had a double and a pair of RBI. Stefan Bailie (2-4, HR, RBI) was the only Cougar with more than one hit. Zach Fisher (0-7) suffered the loss.

Stanford 19, at Washington State 3 (May 19, 2001) - Stanford picked up a 19-3 victory over Washington State by pounding out a season-high 24 hits and scoring a season-high 10 runs in the second inning. Four Stanford players collected four hits each as Chris O'Riordan (4-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI), Andy Topham (4-6, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and Sam Fuld (4-6, 3 RBI) tied career-highs with four hits, while Jason Cooper (4-5, RBI) picked up the first four-hit game of his career. Jeff Bruksch limited the Cougars to one run and four hits in 7.0 innings as he snapped a three-game losing streak on the mound. Bruksch struck out six and allowed no bases on balls, retiring the final 11 batters he faced. Bookie Gates (2-3, HR, 2 RBI) and Evan Hecker (2-4, RBI) combined for four of the Cougars' six hits. Cougar starter Jamin Svendsen (2-3) was tagged with the loss as he was touched for four runs on three hits in 1.0 plus innings.

Stanford 14, at Washington State 6 (May 18, 2001) - Stanford blasted a season-high six homers in a 14-6 win at Washington State. Scott Dragicevich, Carlos Quentin, Chris O'Riordan, Andy Topham, Arik VanZandt and Ryan Garko all homered for the Cardinal. Stanford's 40th win of the year marked the seventh consecutive season the Cardinal has posted 40 or more victories. Jeremy Guthrie earned the victory to become the first Cardinal pitcher to win 10 games this season. Guthrie gave up a season-high 13 hits and five runs but allowed only two earned runs in 6.1 innings, striking out six and walking one. Stanford 17, at UCLA 4 (May 19, 2002) - Stanford hit a season-high-tying five home runs in a 17-4 victory over UCLA to win the rubber game of the series. Chris Carter (2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI) had two of Stanford's five homers. Ryan Garko (3-5, 2 2B, HR) hit his team-leading 13th home run, while Jason Cooper (3-5, HR, 2 RBI) homered for the 12th time this season. Scott Dragicevich (3-6, 3B, HR, 3 RBI) also went deep. Arik VanZandt (3-4, 2 RBI) added three hits for the Cardinal, while Brian Hall had two RBI. Tim Cunningham (7-2) picked up the victory, scattering eight hits and four runs (three earned) over the first 7.0 innings. Adam Berry (2-4, HR, RBI) had his Pac-10 leading 17th homer for the Bruins.

Stanford 11, at UCLA 0 (May 17, 2002) - Jeremy Guthrie tossed his second career shutout and struck out a career-high 13 batters to lead Stanford to a dominating 11-0 victory over UCLA. Guthrie allowed just six hits and did not walk a batter as he picked up his fourth complete game in a row. Sam Fuld (3-5) and Scott Dragicevich (3-5) had three hits each, while Jason Cooper (2-4, HR, 3 RBI), Andy Topham (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Brian Hall (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) added two hits each for the Cardinal. Casey Grzecka (2-4) was the only Bruin player with more than one hit. UCLA starter Mike Kunes (7-4) took the loss, allowing five runs and six hits in 5.1 innings.

STANFORD DROPS ONE SPOT TO NO. 8 IN BASEBALL AMERICA POLL
Stanford dropped one spot to No. 8 in this week's Baseball America poll released May 20 after splitting four games last week. Stanford currently ranks No. 8 (Baseball Weekly/ESPN) and No. 12 (Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA) in the three other major national polls. Stanford began the season as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and stayed on top of the Baseball America poll for the first seven weeks of the year before falling out of the top spot for the first time on April 1. Stanford spent two weeks (4/9 - 4/16) last year as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and six weeks as Baseball America's top team (3/12 - 4/16) before finishing the year at No. 2 in all four polls. Stanford has been ranked No. 1 at one point during each of the past six years (including 2002). Stanford's poll history includes a run as "king of the polls" in 1998 when the team held the top spot in the Baseball America poll for the entire regular season (a record 14 consecutive weeks). USC (No. 21 Baseball America, No. 24 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 22 Collegiate Baseball, No. 23 NCBWA) and Arizona State (No. 24 Baseball America, No. 17 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 24 Collegiate Baseball, No. 22 NCBWA) are the other ranked Pac-10 teams.
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS
For the second consecutive season, the Cardinal struggled in the second half of April before playing well in May. Last year, the team struggled to a 3-5 record during its eight games in the second half of April before going 12-3 in May. This year, the team finished at 4-4 after the tax deadline and is 8-4 in its first 12 games of May.
TOP OF THE PAC
Stanford (13-8 Pac-10) has moved within 1.0 game of first place USC (14-7 Pac-10) heading into the final weekend of Pac-10 action this Friday-Sunday. The Cardinal is in a second place tie with Washington (13-8 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 standings after winning eight of its last 10 Pac-10 games. Stanford hosts Washington State in a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, while Washington hosts Arizona and USC travels to UCLA. Stanford is trying to finish among the top two in the conference standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division) for the ninth straight year and the 20th time in the last 22 years with the only blemishes over that time period a fourth place finish in 1989 and a sixth place showing in 1993.
STANFORD EXTENDS SUNKEN DIAMOND SERIES WIN STREAK TO 21
Stanford won its 21st straight regular season series at Sunken Diamond by winning two-of-three games against Arizona State (5/10 - 5/12/02) in its most recent home series. The last team to win a series against Stanford at Sunken Diamond was USC with two-of-three wins April 16-18, 1999.
CARDINAL SHOOTING FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT 40-WIN SEASON
Stanford needs three more victories to wrap up its eighth straight 40-win season. The last time the Cardinal didn't win 40 games was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993.

STANFORD LEADS PAC-10 IN 13 TEAM CATEGORIES
Stanford leads the Pac-10 in 13 team categories, including batting average (.323), ERA (4.23) and fielding percentage (.971). Stanford also paces the conference in runs scored (432), doubles (122), total bases (1015), slugging percentage (.522), hits (629), runs batted in (397), home runs (74), sacrifice flies (37), opponents' batters struck out looking (134) and wins (37).
STANFORD PLAYERS LEAD PAC-10 IN EIGHT INDIVIDUAL CATEGORIES
Stanford players lead the Pac-10 in eight individual categories. Jeremy Guthrie leads the Pac-10 in four categories -- ERA (2.68), strikeouts (109), opposing batting average (.233), runners picked off (4). Sam Fuld paces the conference in hits (91) and at bats (237), while Chris O'Riordan paces the league in total plate appearances (267) and Carlos Quentin is the co-leader in hit-by-pitches (16).
JEREMY GUTHRIE NAMED GOLDEN SPIKES AWARD FINALIST
Jeremy Guthrie has been named one of five national finalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award. The other finalists are Russ Adams (North Carolina, Jr., INF), Jeff Baker (Clemson, Jr., INF), Bobby Brownlie (Jr., RHP) and Khalil Greene (Clemson, Sr., INF).
JEREMY GUTHRIE HONORED AFTER FIRST SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON
Jeremy Guthrie was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week on May 20 after tossing his first shutout of the season and striking out a career-high 13 batters in an 11-0 win at UCLA on May 17. The complete game was the fourth straight four Guthrie, who has now won 14 of his last 15 decisions dating back to last season.
SLAMMIN' SAMMY ON A SERIOUS TEAR
Sam Fuld has extended his hot streak to 18 multiple-hit games in his last 21 contests as he is hitting .505 (46-91) over the period with four homers, 18 RBI and seven stolen bases during the amazing stretch. Fuld remains on top of Stanford's career batting average list with a .371 lifetime mark (172-464). For the season, he leads the club with a .384 batting average, 91 hits, 16 doubles, 237 at bats, a .441 on base percentage, 32 multiple-hit games, 10 three-hit games and three four-hit games.
SAM FULD LEADING CARDINAL IN PAC-10 PLAY
Sam Fuld has been Stanford's top hitter among regulars in Pac-10 action with a .398 batting average (37-93) in 21 Pac-10 games. Fuld also leads the team in hits (37), RBI (21), runs scored (26) and stolen bases (7) during conference action, while adding four homers.
RYAN GARKO MAINTAINS TEAM HOME RUN LEAD
Ryan Garko has maintained his spot as the team's home run leader after hitting his 13th home run of the season at UCLA (5/19).
TRIO PRODUCING RUNS
The middle of the Cardinal lineup -- Ryan Garko, Jason Cooper and Carlos Quentin -- has combined to drive in 145 runs in 53 games this season. Quentin currently leads the group with 50 RBI, while Cooper (48) and Garko (47) are close behind.
CHRIS O'RIORDAN EXTENDS GAMES STARTED STREAK TO 164
Chris O'Riordan has extended his string of consecutive games started at second base to 164. O'Riordan also had a couple of other notable streaks earlier this season, hitting safely in a career-high 12 straight games (4/5 - 4/21) and reaching base in 38 straight contests (2/1 - 4/21) before having both streaks snapped when he went 0-for-4 without reaching base in the series opener at Oregon State (4/26).
REGULAR STARTING PITCHING ROTATION NOW 24-4 WITH 3.76 ERA
Stanford's regular starting pitching rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (9-1, 2.68, 114.1 IP, 105 SO), John Hudgins (8-1, 5.02, 84.1 IP, 55 SO) and Tim Cunningham (7-2, 3.96, 88.2 IP, 54 SO) is now a combined 24-4 with a 3.76 ERA this season.
STANFORD SURPASSES 2001 HOME RUN TOTAL
Stanford has already surpassed its home run total of last season with 74 roundtrippers. The Cardinal is eight homers away from breaking into the school's all-time Top 5 list.
RUNNING OVER THE OPPOSITION
Stanford has nearly doubled its opponents stolen base total this season with 64 thefts compared to 33 for its opponents. Brian Hall leads the club with 12 stolen bases and is a perfect 12-for-12 this season. Carlos Quentin (10), Arik VanZandt (9), Sam Fuld (8), Andy Topham (7) and Donny Lucy (6) all have six or more stolen bases to their credit.
HAPPY AT HOME
Stanford is 21-4 at Sunken Diamond this season, while managing just a 16-12 mark on the road. Stanford is just 5-7 in its last 12 road games and lost two-of-three games in back-to-back Pac-10 road series at Washington (4/19 - 4/21) and Oregon State (4/26 - 4/28). Stanford has now won eight of its last nine games at home.

STANFORD SNAPS OUT OF ITS ONLY LOSING STREAK OF SEASON
Stanford's first and only losing streak of the year came when the Cardinal dropped the first two games at Oregon State (4/26 - 4/27). The Cardinal snapped out of the streak with a 13-0 win at Oregon State (4/28) in the series finale and has won nine of its 13 games since the two consecutive losses.
STANFORD SETS NEW SEASON-HIGH ATTENDANCE RECORD
The big crowds at Sunken Diamond reached a new high point this year when the Cardinal drew a season-high 4143 fans for its series finale versus California (5/5). Stanford is averaging 2671 fans per game through its first 25 home contests this season an increase of 656 fans per game to its average of 2015 fans through 25 games last year.

STANFORD BASEBALL HISTORY
Stanford's storied baseball program has had many highlights as the program is in its 109th season with an all-time record of 2316-1464-32 (.612). The Cardinal won NCAA titles in 1987 and 1988 before returning to the CWS championship game in each of the last two years (2000, 2001). The program has had winning seasons in 37 of its last 38 campaigns and 54 of its last 56 seasons (including this year), has recorded three straight 50-win seasons for the first time in school history (1999-2001) and has reached the 40-win mark in seven consecutive campaigns (1995-2001). Just a few of the other highlights have included 13 College World Series appearances, 18 conference titles and 22 NCAA Tournament berths. Stanford has boasted a total of 43 All-Americans who have earned a total of 50 All-American honors. Stanford has also garnered three NCAA Player of the Year choices in Jeff Austin (1998), David McCarty (1991) and Steve Dunning (1970). Other numbers for the Cardinal Baseball program include 96 All-Conference players earning a total of 121 All-Conference honors, 57 major league players and 12 first round draft picks in the last 15 years.
OFFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's team batting average currently sits at .323 and has been at .315 or higher all season. Stanford has raised its mark from a season-low .315 after a game at Arizona (4/5) with double figure hits in 17 of its last 27 games. Stanford has had a pair of season-high-tying 19-run games in a 19-2 win versus Saint Mary's (4/16) and a 19-1 win at Arizona (4/6) with a season-high 26 hits in the latter. Stanford has scored double-digit runs 17 times and is averaging 8.2 runs per game. The team also has double-digit hits in 35 of its 53 games. The Cardinal has hit 74 homers, already surpassing its homer total from last year. Brian Hall leads the club with 12 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Cooper (.361), Scott Dragicevich (.355), Chris O'Riordan (.332), Quentin (.323), Andy Topham (.318), Arik VanZandt (.315) and Garko (.313) are other regulars hitting above .300.
PITCHING REPORT
Stanford's ERA currently sits at 4.23 through its first 53 games. Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (9-1, 2.68, 114.1 IP, 105 SO), John Hudgins (8-1, 5.02, 84.1 IP, 55 SO) and Tim Cunningham (7-2, 3.96, 88.2 IP, 54 SO) is a combined 24-4 with a 3.76 ERA. Guthrie paces the club in victories (#2 Pac-10), ERA (#1 Pac-10), innings pitched (#2 Pac-10), strikeouts (#1 Pac-10) and complete games (4). Guthrie (at UCLA, 5/19) and Hudgins (at Oregon State, 4/28) both have one shutout. Guthrie has the team's longest performance of the year with a career-high 10.0 innings pitched at Arizona (4/5) in an eventual 18-inning 5-4 Stanford win. Ryan McCally (4-3, 4.07, 7 SV, 43.0 IP, 35 SO) has been the team's top reliever this year with seven saves, second in the Pac-10. Dan Rich (1-2, 2.73, 2 SV, 26.1 IP, 32 SO) and Darin Naatjes (4-0, 2.79, 2 SV, 19.1 IP, 23 SO) have emerged as two of the club's top relievers. Others pitching primarily out of the bullpen include Jonny Dyer (2-0, 4.38, 12.1 IP, 8 SO), David O'Hagan (0-0, 5.11, 12.1 IP, 8 SO), Drew Ehrlich (0-2, 5.59, 2 SV, 38.2 IP, 39 SO), J.D. Willcox (2-1, 6.59, 13.2 IP, 4 SO) and Mark Jecmen (0-4, 8.26, 28.1 IP, 19 SO).
DEFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's fielding percentage currently sits at .971, tied for its best of the year and only .006 percentage points below last year's .977 school record and nation's best mark. Stanford has been errorless in four of its last 10 games and a total of 18 games this year. Ryan Garko leads the club with 336 putouts, while Chris O'Riordan has a team-high 175 assists. The Cardinal has turned 61 double plays, including a season-high four at Fresno State (2/18), and is just four shy of equaling the school record of 65 set last season. Arik VanZandt posted a team season-best 15 putouts at Arizona (4/6). O'Riordan had a team season-best 10 assists at Arizona (4/5).
STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 26th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2002. Marquess has a career record of 1083-531-5 (.670), all at Stanford. Marquess coached his 1600th game at Stanford this season in a 19-2 win over Saint Mary's (4/16). Last year, he became the 23rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the 1000-win mark with a 6-2 victory over Florida State in a game played on February 9, 2001. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles (1987, '88) and two other CWS title game appearances (2000, '01), as well as 11 College World Series appearances (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 11 NCAA Regional titles (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles (1983, '84, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99, 2000) and three NCAA Super Regional championships (1999, 2000, '01). The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 19 times under Marquess. He began the 2002 season ranked 12th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches, while ranking 23rd on the all-time victory list and 42nd on the all-time winning percentage list. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times (1985, '87, '88) and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions (1983, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99). The Cardinal has posted winning seasons 25 times in 26 years under his leadership (includes this season) and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 19 times in the last 21 years. Stanford has had 99 professional baseball draft picks in the past 17 seasons, including 12 first round selections in the last 15 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 26th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his third season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis (3rd season) handles the Cardinal pitching staff, while Dave Nakama (3rd season) returns as an assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach at San Francisco State. Nakama, also a Cardinal assistant in 1997 and 1998, assists with all aspects of the game and serves as Stanford's first base coach.
