Stanford moved into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 with a 6-1 victory over Washington State in Friday's series-opener, while California dropped a 10-2 decision at UCLA ... Stanford has won six straight series and 16 of its last 21 games overall ... Stanford jumped four spots in the latest Baseball America poll released March 31 ... Stanford is also ranked No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball, No. 6 by the NCBWA and No. 7 by Sports Weekly/ESPN ... Stanford has won 16 career Pac-10 championships (includes Southern Division and shared titles) and finished either first or second in the conference 20 times in the last 22 years ... The Cardinal has put up excellent offensive numbers in 11 March games, scoring 103 runs (9.4 per game) and hitting .370 with 11 double-digit hits in all 11 games (a streak that was snapped with just seven hits yesterday) ... STANFORD BASEBALL QUICK INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Carlos Quentin, Sam Fuld and Ryan Garko have been swinging the team's hottest bats ... Quentin has a current career-high 17-game hit streak (.470, 31-66), a team-high batting average of .398 and collected his 200th career hit versus USF (4/1) ... Fuld has tied his career-high with his current 13-game hit streak (.484, 31-64) and has regained his spot on top of Stanford's career batting average list (.363) ... Fuld has taken over the team's lead in hits (46) and runs scored (29) ... Garko, the team's leader in both homers (6) and RBI (37), is hitting .560 (14-25) with two homers and 12 RBI in his last six games ... Mark Romanczuk was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career on April 1 after throwing his first career complete game in a 4-2 win at Arizona State eight days earlier ... Romanczuk paces the club and co-leads the Pac-10 in victories with a 6-0 record ... John Hudgins leads the conference and the team with 73.0 innings pitched and 67 strikeouts ... Hudgins tossed his second complete game of the season and the fifth of his career in yesterday's 6-1 victory at Washington State.
STANFORD-WASHINGTON STATE PREVIEW AND SERIES HISTORY
Stanford continues its three-game series at Washington State Saturday and Sunday (1 pm, 11 am). Stanford leads the all-time series, 21-13, and has won all 13 games versus Washington State since the Pac-10 expanded to include the Cougars in 1999. The Cardinal swept a three-game set at Sunken Diamond last season from May 24-26 (W, 10-0; W, 11-3; W, 8-2) and also won three in a row the last time the teams played in Pullman (May 18-20, 2001; W, 14-6; W, 19-3; W, 12-1).

Stanford 6, at Washington State 1 (April 4, 2003)
John Hudgins tossed his second complete game of the season and the fifth of his career to lead Stanford to a 6-1 victory over Washington State in the opener of a three-game Pac-10 series at Bailey-Brayton Field. Carlos Quentin extended his career-best hit streak to 17 games, while Sam Fuld ran his to a career-high-tying 13 in a row. Jonny Ash (2-3, 2 RBI) was the only Stanford player with more than one hit, while Jed Lowrie added a pair of RBI. The victory moved Stanford into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10, one-half game ahead of UCLA (3-1 Pac-10). The Bruins defeated California, 10-2, on Friday evening.
Hudgins, who won for the first time since also going the distance at California on March 7, allowed just seven hits and one run while striking out six in the fastest Stanford game of the season, which clocked in at two hours and one minute.
The only run off Hudgins came on a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the sixth by Jeremy Farrar. Hudgins gave up more than one hit only once in the sixth frame and was benefited by a double play prior to Farrar's homer. The Cardinal turned its second double play to get out of the eighth inning after the Cougars had put runners on first and second with one out.
Washington State's Tony Banaszak (1-7) suffered the loss despite holding the Cardinal to seven hits and pitching his third complete game of the season.
Wes Falkenborg (2-4, 2B) was the only Washington State player with more than one hit.
Stanford's victory made the Cardinal a perfect 13-0 versus Washington State since the Cougars rejoined the Pac-10 in 1999. The Cardinal holds an all-time lead in the series, 21-13.
Stanford's seven-hit effort ended the team's string of 12 consecutive games with double-digit hits.
Quentin's overall batting average dropped .002 points to .398 with his 1-for-3 performance. He is hitting at a .470 clip (31-66) during his 17-game hit streak.
Fuld is hitting .500 (31-62) during his 13-game hit streak and has an updated career batting average of .363, one percentage point ahead of the second-place .362 mark posted by the late Jack Shepard from 1951-53.
