Stanford has won a season-best nine straight games and seven consecutive Pac-10 games to move its magic number for a share of the Pac-10 title to one and its magic number for an outright conference championship to two ... Stanford (17-5 Pac-10) is 3.0 games ahead of Arizona State (12-6 Pac-10), as well as 4.0 games in front of Arizona (11-7 Pac-10) ... Stanford has won 16 career Pac-10 championships (includes Southern Division and shared titles) and finished either first or second in the conference 20 times in the last 22 years ... Carlos Quentin leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-10 with a .403 batting average ... Quentin, who was named one of five finalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award on May 6 and one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Smith Award on May 16, is attempting to become the first Stanford player to hit .400 or better since David McCarty hit .420 in 1991 ... Quentin has a current eight-game hit streak (5/3 - 5/11) and has hit safely in 36 of his last 38 games (.435, 67-154) with a career-high 26-game hit streak that lasted two months (February 22 - April 22) ... Quentin also paces the team in hits (79), doubles (23), walks (31), hit-by-pitches (11), on-base percentage (.502) and extra-base hits (31, co-leader with Ryan Garko) ... Garko, a Johnny Bench Award candidate, is the team's leader in homers (14), RBI (73), total bases (136), slugging percentage (.683), multiple-hit games (24), multiple-RBI games (22) and extra-base hits (31, co-leader with Quentin) ... at Stanford 10, Saint Mary's 1 (May 13, 2003)
Stanford extended its win streak to a season-high eight games with a 10-1 victory over Saint Mary's in a non-conference game. Ryan Garko (2-2, 2B, 4 RBI) drove in four runs to raise his team-leading total to 72 and Cardinal starter Mark Jecmen (1-0) picked up his first collegiate victory, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings and scattering three hits with a season-high four strikeouts. Stanford scored five times in its first two turns at the plate and never trailed in the contest. The victory was Stanford's 15th in a row over the Gaels dating back to 1994.
Brian Hall (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Sam Fuld (2-4, 2B, RBI) also had multiple-hit games for the Cardinal. Stanford stroked six doubles to tie a season high as Jed Lowrie, Chris Carter and Donny Lucy all added two-baggers. Fuld and Lowrie both extended their current hit streaks to eight games.
at Stanford 9, UCLA 1 (May 16, 2003)
Stanford reduced its magic number for at least a share of the Pac-10 title to one and extended its season-best win streak to nine games with a convincing 9-1 victory over UCLA in the opener of a three-game series at Sunken Diamond. John Hudgins tossed his Pac-10 leading fifth complete game of the season to give the Cardinal its seventh straight conference win, allowing just one run and four hits with 10 strikeouts. Jonny Ash (3-5) tied a career-high with three hits, while Carlos Quentin (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) drove in three runs to lead a Cardinal offense that pounded out 15 hits with all nine starters picking up at least one hit.
Hudgins had a no-hitter going until a two-out single by Brandon Averill in the top of the fifth. In the seventh, UCLA loaded the bases with no outs before Ryan McCarthy grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that scored Wes Whisler with the Bruins' only run of the game but thwarted the rally. UCLA's Preston Griffin hit into the Bruins' second double play in the top of the eighth inning after Matt Thayer had started off the inning with a single.
Sam Fuld (2-4, RBI), John Mayberry, Jr. (2-4, 2 2B) and Ryan Garko (2-5, RBI) added two hits each for the Cardinal, while Chris Carter hit his second homer of the season in the bottom of the second inning. Fuld and Jed Lowrie extended their hit streaks to nine games.
UCLA starter Casey Janssen suffered the loss, allowing six runs and a career-high 11 hits over the first 3.2 innings. UCLA reliever Mike Kunes finished the game with 4.1 innings of work, limiting the Cardinal to three runs and four hits.
STANFORD-UCLA SERIES HISTORYStanford leads the all-time series, 177-132, after taking last night's series opener by a score of 9-1. The Cardinal won two-of-three in Los Angeles last year (5/17 - 5/19; W, 11-0; L, 4-9; W, 17-4) and also won two-of-three games the last time the teams met at Sunken Diamond (4/7-4/8/01; L, 4-6; W, 9-0; W, 11-2). Stanford has won six straight series between the teams with the last Bruin series victory coming in 1997 when UCLA won two-of-three in both series versus the Cardinal.
