Richmond and Illinois-Chicago will play in an elimination game (11 am) before Stanford and UC Riverside meet in a winners' bracket contest (3 pm) ... Another elimination game between the Richmond/Illinois-Chicago winner and the Stanford-UC Riverside loser will take place at 7 pm ... UC Riverside came from behind for a 10-8 victory over Richmond and Stanford defeated Illinois-Chicago, 9-2, on Friday's opening day of the Regional ... Stanford is serving as a Regional host for the eighth straight year and the 12th time in school history ... 2003 NCAA DIVISION I BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION
Stanford is one of 16 Regional hosts and the No. 6 national seed for the 2003 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The first weekend of play May 30 - June 1 features 16 four-team Regionals with the winners advancing to eight NCAA Super Regionals to be held June 6-9. The winner of the 2002 NCAA Regional at Stanford will face the winner of the Regional being hosted by Long Beach State with Minnesota, Washington and Pepperdine also in the field. Super Regional sites will be announced on Monday, June 2. The winners of the eight Super Regionals, all to be televised by ESPN/ESPN2 for the first time, advance to the 57th College World Series to be held June 13-23 at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. The CWS championship format has changed this year with the two bracket winners playing a best-of-three series for the national title.
