STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Nicole Powell has been drafted by the Charlotte Sting as the third pick in the first round of the 2004 WNBA Draft. Powell, a 6-2 forward from Phoenix, Ariz., led the Cardinal this season to a NCAA Elite Eight appearance, while notching a team-high 627 points and 346 rebounds. She is the only three-time Kodak All-American in Stanford women's basketball history.
She finished her Cardinal ranked first in total rebounds (1,143), first in career rebounds per game (9.6), second in points per game (17.3), second in free throw percentage (82.9; 457-of-551), second in free throws attempted (551), second in 3-pointers attempted (518), second in 3-pointers made (201), third in total points (2,062) and fifth in assists (577)
This season, she earned Women's Wooden Award All-America honors, was named an Associated Press First-Team All-American and was a finalist for the Naismith Award and the State Farm Wade Trophy. Powell was named the 2004 NCAA Midwest Region's Most Outstanding Player, was a two-time Pac-10 Player of the Year, a four-time First-Team All-Pac-10 selection and three-time Pac-10 Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Powell holds single season (346; 2003-04) and single game (21 vs. Oregon, Jan. 13, 2002) Stanford rebounding records. She owns six of the 12 triple-doubles in Pac-10 history, and six of the eight in Stanford history, and is the only Pac-10 player to have ever recorded more than one career triple-double.
